About WWD

WWD, Women's Wear Daily, is the fashion industry's newspaper of record, published in New York City since July 13, 1910. Founded by Edmund Fairchild as an outgrowth of the menswear journal Daily News Record, it is often called the "bible of fashion," providing a balance of timely business news and fashion trends for retailers, designers, manufacturers, marketers, financiers, and media executives. The flagship publication of Fairchild Media, owned by Penske Media Corporation, WWD reaches a global audience of nearly 16 million every month across print, digital, mobile, video, social, and events. In April 2015, the paper switched from daily print to a weekly format with a daily digital edition, and it has since focused print on fashion weeks and key events. It publishes at wwd.com.

Founding in 1910

WWD was founded by Edmund Fairchild on July 13, 1910, when a "Women's Wear" insert in the Daily News Record became a standalone publication. Fairchild, who had taken over the failing Daily Trade Record in 1892 and built Fairchild Publications into a fashion publishing empire, recognized the women's apparel industry's need for its own daily news source. The publication quickly acquired standing in the New York clothing industry through the influence of its first advertisers. Edith Rosenbaum Russell served as its first Paris correspondent, establishing the international coverage that would define the paper. The founding reflected the garment industry's growth: as New York became the center of American fashion manufacturing, its businesses needed daily intelligence on trends, retail, and competition.

The John Fairchild era

John B. Fairchild, grandson of the founder, transformed WWD from a trade journal into a fashion and cultural newspaper. Becoming European bureau chief in 1955 and publisher in 1960, he focused on the human side of fashion, turning the paper's attention to the social scene of designers and their clients and manufacturing a "cult of celebrity" around designers. Fairchild played hardball for circulation: when couturiers forbade press coverage until after buyers had seen collections, he published photos and sketches anyway, sent reporters disguised as messengers into fashion houses, and stationed observers in windows opposite ateliers. His memoir's confession that he had learned "to be a little savage" in fashion captured the combative journalism that made WWD essential reading. Publisher from 1960 to 1996, he made the paper feared and indispensable.

Ownership evolution

WWD's ownership history traces the consolidation of American media. In 1968, Fairchild Publications was purchased by Capital Cities Communications; in 1996, Disney acquired Capital Cities/ABC; in 1999, Disney sold Fairchild to Advance Publications, Condé Nast's parent, for $650 million. Advance folded Fairchild into Condé Nast in 2005 as the Fairchild Fashion Group, later Fairchild Fashion Media. In August 2014, Advance sold Fairchild Media, save for Style.com, to Penske Media Corporation for $100 million. Under Penske, WWD operates alongside Footwear News, Beauty Inc, and other Fairchild brands as the flagship of the fashion media group. Each ownership change tested the paper's identity; its survival across all of them testifies to the brand's enduring value.

The bible of fashion

WWD's nickname, the "bible of fashion," reflects its authority as the industry's daily record. Its readership spans retailers, designers, manufacturers, marketers, financiers, media executives, advertising agencies, and trend-makers, the decision-makers of the global fashion business. The paper's journalism combines business reporting, financial analysis of fashion companies, runway reviews, and cultural coverage. Its ability to make or break reputations, demonstrated in John Fairchild's feuds with designers from Givenchy to Saint Laurent to Armani, gave it power rare for a trade publication. For more than 115 years, getting it first and getting it right has been the paper's defining standard.

Digital transformation

In April 2015, WWD switched from daily print to a weekly print format accompanied by a daily digital edition, with the final newsprint daily printed on April 24. In 2017, it reduced print further, publishing print issues only during fashion weeks and key events while focusing resources on digital. The Digital Daily delivers fashion, beauty, and retail news every morning to the industry's inboxes. Editor-in-chief Miles Socha, who succeeded longtime editorial head Ed Nardoza, has led the digital-first strategy with new columns and features. The transformation recognized that the fashion industry's need for immediacy had moved online, while print retained value as a prestige product for fashion's marquee moments.

Events and summits

WWD extends its journalism through events including the annual WWD Apparel & Retail CEO Summit and global summits in international markets. These gatherings convene the fashion industry's chief executives and leaders for strategic discussion, reflecting the paper's role as the industry's forum. The summits' programming addresses the business challenges facing fashion, from digital transformation to sustainability to changing consumer behavior. For an industry built on relationships and creative exchange, the events provide the face-to-face forums where deals are discussed and directions set. The events business diversifies the brand's revenue while deepening its institutional role.

Fairchild Media

WWD anchors Fairchild Media, Penske's fashion publishing division, whose brands include Footwear News, Beauty Inc, and M. The division is a source of fashion news and analysis for industry leaders and the global fashion community. Under Penske's ownership, Fairchild Media has invested in digital platforms, video, and events, modernizing the historic brands for the digital era. The division's portfolio strategy covers fashion's segments: WWD for the overall industry, Footwear News for shoes, Beauty Inc for cosmetics. This structure allows coordinated coverage of the fashion business while preserving each brand's distinct editorial voice and audience.

Beauty coverage

WWD's beauty coverage, through its Beauty Inc brand, addresses the cosmetics industry's business with the same rigor the paper brings to fashion. The beauty business, from luxury skincare to mass cosmetics, has become one of fashion's most dynamic segments, and WWD's reporting covers its deals, trends, and personalities. Beauty Inc's journalism serves the beauty industry's executives with news and analysis tailored to their market. This coverage reflects the convergence of fashion and beauty: the same conglomerates often own both, and the same consumers buy both. For the beauty industry's leaders, WWD's coverage provides the business intelligence their market demands.

Menswear coverage

WWD's menswear coverage traces back to the paper's origins as an outgrowth of the Daily News Record, the menswear journal. The 2010 launch of the Menswear title acknowledged the growing business importance of men's fashion. Coverage of menswear designers, retailers, and trends serves an industry segment that has grown dramatically in the 21st century. The paper's reporting on the menswear business, from tailoring to streetwear, reflects the segment's creative and commercial vitality. This coverage honors the publication's roots while addressing one of fashion's most dynamic contemporary markets.

Runway coverage

WWD's runway coverage remains the industry's definitive record of fashion's creative output. Its reviews of designer collections from New York, Paris, Milan, and London set the critical agenda for each season, influencing buyers, editors, and consumers. The paper's critics bring business awareness to aesthetic judgment, assessing collections for both creativity and commercial viability. This dual lens reflects the paper's trade roots: fashion is art, but it is also business. For designers, a WWD review can define a career; for the industry, the reviews constitute the historical record of fashion's evolution.

Website and outlook

WWD publishes at wwd.com, where its daily digital journalism serves the global fashion industry. From Edmund Fairchild's 1910 founding through John Fairchild's transformative publisher era, the corporate odyssey from Capital Cities to Penske, and the digital reinvention of the 2010s, the paper has remained fashion's newspaper of record. As the industry navigates digital disruption, sustainability imperatives, and changing consumer culture, WWD continues its mission of delivering spirited coverage with frequency, integrity, and the legacy of getting it first and getting it right.
