About Y108 (CJXY)

Y108 (CJXY)

Y108, broadcasting on 107.9 MHz as CJXY-FM, is an active rock radio station serving the Hamilton, Ontario, market. Licensed to the nearby city of Burlington and owned by Corus Entertainment, the station pairs a current-leaning rock playlist with specialty programming and sports coverage, positioning itself as Hamilton's rock station while reaching a broad swath of the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. Its studios are located on Main Street West in Hamilton, near Highway 403, and its transmitter sits atop the Niagara Escarpment near Cedar Springs Road and Number 1 Side Road in Burlington.

Overview

CJXY-FM broadcasts at 107.9 MHz as a Class B station with an effective radiated power of 26,100 watts from a tower 205 metres above average terrain. The station's format is active rock with an alternative lean, branded as Y108 — a name adopted in 2001 when it moved to its current frequency. Its listed broadcast area spans the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, the Waterloo Region, and the Niagara Region, and radio directories note the signal reaching as far north as Toronto and Vaughan and as far south as St. Catharines.

The station is one of Corus Entertainment's two Hamilton FM outlets, alongside sister station CING-FM, and its programming blends mainstream and alternative rock currents with syndicated specialty shows and coverage of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League. After decades as one of the oldest FM signals in the region, the station repositioned itself in the mid-2010s toward a more current-heavy active rock sound under the slogan "Y108, World Class Rock."

History

The station's history stretches back to 1948, making it one of the longest-running FM operations in the Hamilton area. It launched that year on 94.1 MHz as CHML-FM, a simulcast of AM station CHML. The simulcast arrangement ended in the 1950s, after which the FM signal fell silent. The owners revived it in 1964 on the 95.3 frequency with programming distinct from its AM sister station.

In 1967 the station adopted the callsign CKDS-FM, chosen in honour of company founder Kenneth D. Soble, who had died in 1966. The CKDS years carried an adult contemporary and easy listening format through the 1970s and 1980s. In 1974, CHML and CKDS-FM were purchased by ML Radio, a division of what would become Western International Communications (WIC). The most dramatic turn came on September 1, 1991, when CKDS-FM dropped its long-running adult contemporary/easy listening format, took the CJXY callsign, and launched a classic rock format as "Y95" — a change covered at the time by the Hamilton Spectator. The Y95 identity gave Hamilton its first full-time FM rock station of the modern era.

The Y95 years gave the station a distinct personality in the Hamilton market. The classic rock format of the 1990s capitalized on a wave of rock nostalgia, and the station built a loyal audience among listeners who had grown up with album rock but found little of it on the FM dial. The branding played on the station's dial position at the time, and the format's success helped establish the rock lane that every subsequent iteration of the station has occupied.

Ownership changed again at the turn of the millennium. In 2000, CHML and CJXY were acquired by Corus Entertainment as part of its purchase of WIC's radio assets. On August 31, 2001, CJXY swapped frequencies with Corus sister station CING-FM: CJXY moved from 95.3 to its current 107.9, and CING moved the other way to 95.3. With the new frequency came the current branding, Y108. The frequency swap was part of a broader Corus reorganization of its Hamilton cluster and repositioned both stations for the decade ahead.

The 2000s brought further evolution in the station's sound and staffing. Longtime CFNY-FM host Alan Cross served as program director until 2004, when he returned to CFNY. In the mid-2010s the station made a deliberate format adjustment, moving from a classic-leaning rock mix toward a more active rock presentation with a substantial increase in current music. With that tweak it changed its long-used slogan "Y108 Rocks!" to "Y108, World Class Rock," reflecting a playlist with less classic rock and more pop-rock and current alternative titles.

Programming

Y108's core product is an active rock format that blends current alternative and mainstream rock with established rock hits. The station has historically carried syndicated specialty programming alongside its music schedule; radio directories have listed shows including Nights with Alice Cooper, the ExploreMusic program, and The Strombo Show among its lineup. As the rock station for the Hamilton market, its schedule is built around morning and drive-time personality programming with music-intensive dayparts.

Sports coverage is part of the station's identity: Y108 is affiliated with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, carrying the CFL club's games and related coverage. That affiliation connects the station to one of the most passionate fan bases in Canadian football and reinforces its positioning as a Hamilton-market outlet, even as its Burlington licence and escarpment transmitter give it reach across the wider region.

Coverage and audience

As a Class B station with 26,100 watts of effective radiated power and a 205-metre tower atop the Niagara Escarpment, CJXY's 107.9 signal is engineered to serve Hamilton while spilling into the surrounding markets. Its licensed broadcast area covers the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, the Waterloo Region, and the Niagara Region. In practice the signal is reported reaching north to Toronto and Vaughan and south to St. Catharines, giving the station a footprint that spans Canada's most populous radio market and the industrial cities of the Golden Horseshoe.

The station's audience positioning sits at the intersection of Hamilton localism and regional reach. Its studios at 875 Main Street West in Hamilton place its operations in the heart of the city it serves, while the Burlington-licensed transmitter location reflects the regulatory geography of the market. The Tiger-Cats affiliation and rock format give it a distinct lane in a market crowded with Toronto-spill signals, and it competes for rock listeners against Toronto's Q107 (CILQ) and other regional rock outlets. Specific current audience figures are not publicly confirmed.

Ownership

CJXY-FM is owned by Corus Entertainment through its Corus Radio division, which operates dozens of stations across Canada. Corus acquired the station in 2000 from Western International Communications, and it has been part of the company's Hamilton cluster ever since, alongside sister station CING-FM (Energy 95.3). Corus is one of Canada's largest radio broadcasters, with its stations regulated by the CRTC under standard commercial radio licence conditions. The station's earlier owners — the Soble family's company, ML Radio/WIC, and the various incarnations that carried it through the CHML-FM and CKDS-FM years — trace a lineage through nearly eight decades of Hamilton broadcasting.

Digital presence

Y108 maintains an online presence through its official website, y108.ca, which carries a live webcast of the station's programming along with station information and promotional content. The station is active on major social media platforms under the Y108 branding, where it promotes its programming, contests, and community involvement. Like other Corus radio properties, the station benefits from the company's broader digital audio infrastructure, and its stream is also carried by third-party radio aggregators that list Canadian stations. A dedicated mobile app specific to the station is not publicly confirmed.
