About Yanzhao Advanced Manufacturing Laboratory
Yanzhao Advanced Manufacturing Laboratory
The Yanzhao Advanced Manufacturing Laboratory is a provincial laboratory of Hebei Province, in northern China, for advanced manufacturing technology, led by Yanshan University in Qinhuangdao. Its establishment was approved by the Hebei Provincial Department of Science and Technology following a construction-plan demonstration meeting held at Yanshan University on 14 April, reported on the university's English website. Yanshan University describes it as Hebei's highest-level strategic industrial technology innovation platform of its kind, integrating comprehensive, breakthrough and leading capabilities. Its director is Liu Riping, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and its mission is to break through key technologies that drive the upgrading of Hebei's manufacturing sector, in support of Hebei's goal of becoming a strong manufacturing province.
Approval at Yanshan University
The laboratory's documented founding step is the construction-plan demonstration meeting held at Yanshan University on 14 April, after which the Hebei Provincial Department of Science and Technology approved its establishment. In China's provincial-laboratory system, a demonstration — an expert review of the construction plan — is the gate through which a proposed laboratory passes before approval: the plan's mission, leadership, research directions and building conditions are examined by outside experts, and approval follows their endorsement. Yanshan University's Chinese and English reporting of the meeting and approval presents the laboratory as the university's entry into Hebei's Yanzhao Laboratory series, the provincial system begun with the steel laboratory in Tangshan and extended to green chemistry in Cangzhou, modern transportation in Shijiazhuang and electric power in Baoding. The manufacturing laboratory completes the series' coverage of Hebei's industrial system.
Yanshan University: the heavy-machinery university
The lead institution explains the laboratory's mission. Yanshan University, in the coastal city of Qinhuangdao, traces its origin to the heavy-machinery teaching of Harbin Institute of Technology: a predecessor institute, the Northeast Heavy Machinery Institute, was established in 1958 from Harbin's heavy-machinery departments, was designated a national key university in 1978, relocated entirely to Qinhuangdao between 1985 and 1997, and took the Yanshan University name. It is remembered as one of the "four little dragons" of mechanical engineering under the former Ministry of Machine-Building Industry. In the Ministry of Education's fourth discipline evaluation, its mechanical engineering received an A-minus rating — Hebei's only A-class discipline in the field — and of the university's twenty national-level science awards, fifteen have come from mechanical engineering, including first prizes in the National Science and Technology Progress Awards. Its documented strengths run through heavy machinery equipment: construction vehicles, lifting machines and cold-rolling equipment among them. A provincial laboratory for advanced manufacturing could hardly be led by a more on-mission Hebei institution.
Director Liu Riping
Liu Riping, the laboratory's director, is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences at Yanshan University, where he has led the State Key Laboratory of Metastable Materials Science and Technology. His record, documented by the university, includes the second prize of the National Technology Invention Award in 2018, for a project he presided over on the detection of space debris and high-energy particles and the key protection materials involved — work done with the Beijing space-vehicle design authorities and Peking University, applied to major space missions including resource satellites and the Tiangong station programme, and to nearly 100 related departments and enterprises, producing 32 authorised national invention patents and more than 170 SCI papers. His research spans metallic and metastable materials, their microstructure and properties, and materials for extreme environments. Advanced manufacturing stands on materials as much as on machines — the director's profile joins the laboratory's manufacturing mission to a materials-science base of national standing.
Mission: a strong manufacturing province
The laboratory's stated mission is to break through key technologies to drive the upgrading of Hebei's manufacturing sector toward a strong manufacturing province. Hebei's industry is heavy: steel, equipment, building materials and automobiles, concentrated in cities including Tangshan, Baoding, Shijiazhuang and Qinhuangdao itself. Upgrading such a base means moving from capacity to capability — precision, reliability, intelligent production, and the high-end equipment that other industries buy. The university describes the laboratory as Hebei's highest-level strategic industrial technology innovation platform of its kind, with comprehensive, breakthrough and leading capabilities: comprehensive, in covering the sector broadly; breakthrough, in attacking the key technologies that constrain it; and leading, in setting directions rather than following them. That three-word characterisation is the laboratory's charter in miniature.
Research base: machinery, materials and intelligent processing
The laboratory's research foundations at its lead university are documented across machinery and materials. Beyond mechanical engineering's A-minus discipline standing, the university's materials science — Liu Riping's own field, housed in its metastable-materials state key laboratory — gives the laboratory its second pillar. The university's international cooperation illustrates the direction of travel: in May 2025 Yanshan University and Spain's IMDEA Materials Institute agreed to establish an international joint laboratory on intelligent computing and innovative processing of metallic materials, headquartered at Yanshan, addressing intelligent computing for strategic sectors including aerospace, energy and ocean engineering, and the processing barriers of lightweight steels and alloys — improving manufacturability, reducing defects and enhancing surface quality through advanced techniques and process optimisation, with joint doctoral training of six to twenty-four months at the partner institute. Intelligent, computing-driven processing of metals is exactly the technology family an advanced-manufacturing provincial laboratory exists to provincialise.
Place in the Yanzhao series
Within Hebei's Yanzhao Laboratory series, the advanced manufacturing laboratory is the generalist: where its sisters serve single industries — steel, green chemicals, transportation, electric power, biomedicine — this laboratory serves the manufacturing method itself, common to all of them. Its host city pairing is also distinctive. Qinhuangdao, a Bohai port city better known nationally for the Beidaihe resort and the eastern end of the Great Wall at Shanhaiguan, holds in Yanshan University one of China's historic heavy-industry universities; the laboratory converts that inheritance into Hebei's manufacturing-upgrade platform. Approval by the provincial science department after the April demonstration meeting placed it, in the university's account, among the province's highest-level strategic platforms, completing a series that now maps Hebei's industrial geography: Tangshan steel, Cangzhou chemicals, Shijiazhuang transport and biomedicine, Baoding power, Qinhuangdao manufacturing.
Qinhuangdao and Hebei manufacturing
Hebei surrounds Beijing and Tianjin and carries a manufacturing belt built over decades of heavy industrialisation. The province's policy vocabulary of becoming a strong manufacturing province reflects the national manufacturing-power strategy applied provincially: keep the industrial base, raise its technology level. A provincial laboratory in this field is judged by whether key technologies actually break through and diffuse into the province's factories — the same applied currency in which its sister laboratories report projects undertaken and technologies adopted. The laboratory's structure, a provincial platform led by a university with academician direction, is Hebei's chosen instrument for that diffusion in manufacturing, as the steel laboratory is for metallurgy and the electric power laboratory for the power system.
Significance
The Yanzhao Advanced Manufacturing Laboratory is significant as the capstone of Hebei's provincial laboratory system and as the institutional form of the province's manufacturing ambitions. Its documented elements are specific: a construction-plan demonstration at Yanshan University on 14 April followed by provincial science-department approval; a lead university whose mechanical engineering is Hebei's only A-class discipline in the field and whose origins lie in the heavy-machinery departments of 1958; a director who is an academician with a national technology-invention prize in space materials; a self-description as the province's highest-level strategic industrial technology innovation platform, comprehensive, breakthrough and leading in character; and a mission stated without ornament — break through key technologies, upgrade Hebei manufacturing, build a strong manufacturing province.
