About Yorkshire Post

The Yorkshire Post is Britain's oldest provincial daily newspaper in continuous publication, a broadsheet published in Leeds since 1754 that carries the proud masthead slogan "Yorkshire's National Newspaper". Owned by National World through Yorkshire Post Newspapers, it covers the whole of Yorkshire with a reputation for serious, independent journalism — including a celebrated history of defying its own proprietors in the cause of editorial independence. In August 2025 its circulation was 8,421.

History and founding

The paper's origins lie in the Leeds Intelligencer, first published on 2 July 1754 — one of the first regional newspapers in Great Britain. A weekly paper published under the motto "The Altar, the Throne and the Cottage", it was from the outset a conservative newspaper, recognised as anti-Catholic and opposed to Chartism. In 1865 it was acquired by the Yorkshire Conservative Newspaper Company Limited, whose first chairman was William Beckett-Denison of the Leeds banking family. On Monday 2 July 1866 it became a daily, renamed the Yorkshire Post and Leeds Intelligencer; the "and Leeds Intelligencer" was dropped in 1883, leaving the Yorkshire Post. In 1923 the company acquired the Leeds Mercury and merged it with the Post in 1939. The company was renamed Yorkshire Post Newspapers in 1969.

Ownership

Yorkshire Post Newspapers was bought by Johnston Press in 2002 for £570 million. After Johnston Press collapsed into administration in 2018, its assets were acquired by JPI Media, which was itself bought by National World — chaired by David Montgomery — in 2021. In 2025 shareholders approved a £65.1 million takeover of National World by Media Concierge, the Irish group owned by the Denmark family, which backed National World's original acquisition and pledged no material job cuts in editorial or production. The paper's head office is in Leeds, having moved from Wellington Street to Whitehall Road in 2012, with printing transferred to Dinnington near Sheffield.

Editorial stance and coverage

The Yorkshire Post is a conservative-leaning broadsheet, but its most famous editorial episode was an act of rebellion against its own side. Under editor Arthur Mann (1919–1939), the paper refused to support Neville Chamberlain's appeasement of Hitler, even though it was published by the Yorkshire Conservative Newspaper Company to serve Yorkshire Conservatives. Mann believed the newspaper must act as a link between public opinion and government and follow the evidence of its reporters — including correspondents who had witnessed Nazi belligerence first-hand. When Chamberlain and the paper's chairman pressed Mann to keep his opinions out of the paper, the editor instead urged the prime minister to be robust with Hitler. The Post's defiance of appeasement remains a landmark in the history of press independence.

Today the paper covers Yorkshire news, politics, business, farming, sport and culture, and considers itself "one of Britain's most trusted and historic newsbrands". It also prints other local titles including the Dewsbury Reporter, Morley Observer and Batley News.

Notable editors and journalists

The current editor is James Mitchinson, who has led the paper through the National World era and become a prominent industry voice on the future of regional journalism. His predecessors include Arthur Mann, whose 1919–1939 editorship defined the paper's independent character, and Peter Charlton, who oversaw both the Yorkshire Post and Yorkshire Evening Post after Johnston Press merged the titles' operations in 2012. The Beckett banking family supplied the company's chairmen from its foundation until Rupert Beckett's retirement in 1950.

Circulation and readership

The Yorkshire Post's circulation was 8,421 in August 2025 — a fraction of its 20th-century sales, but the paper has pointed to recent growth: National World reported in 2025 that group circulation grew 12 per cent year-on-year, with digital revenues up 11 per cent and print advertising up more than a fifth, growing total revenues "in the face of a general sector decline". The paper's readers are among the most loyal in regional publishing, and its "Yorkshire's National Newspaper" positioning gives it a distinctive county-wide identity unmatched by other English regionals.

Print and digital editions

The Post remains a daily broadsheet — one of the few regional broadsheets left in Britain. Its website, yorkshirepost.co.uk, is free to read but in 2018 the paper introduced reader registration and blocked ad-blocker users, with editor James Mitchinson writing an open letter arguing that "high quality journalism" since 1754 had to be paid for, whether through buying the newspaper, subscribing digitally, or accepting advertising. The company has since explored further business models including automated page production, with National World saying it is moving towards full automation of content production processes, including AI-assisted design.

Supplements and magazines

The Yorkshire Post publishes magazines and supplements covering Yorkshire business, property, food and drink, and the county's cultural life, alongside its daily farming and business pages — the agricultural coverage reflecting Yorkshire's rural economy. Its sister paper, the Yorkshire Evening Post, serves Leeds with a more populist daily tabloid.

Controversies and criticism

The paper's history includes the tensions of its Conservative ownership — the Mann-Chamberlain confrontation of 1938 being the most dramatic — and the more recent strains of corporate consolidation: the Johnston Press collapse, the JPI Media interregnum, and successive rounds of cost-cutting that have affected all regional titles. National World's embrace of automation and AI-assisted production has drawn scrutiny from journalists' unions, even as the company insists it is pivoting staff towards "highly monetisable specialist content". The Media Concierge takeover has raised the usual questions about the future of editorial independence under new ownership.

Awards and recognition

The Yorkshire Post has won regional and national press awards across its history, and its reputation for serious journalism — the paper that stood up to Chamberlain — gives it a lustre few provincial titles can match. Industry commentators regularly cite it as the strongest surviving example of the great English provincial broadsheet.

A county newspaper

What sets the Yorkshire Post apart from every other English regional daily is the county itself. Yorkshire's fierce identity — the White Rose, "God's Own County", the rivalry with Lancashire — gives the Post a natural territory no other provincial paper enjoys, and the "Yorkshire's National Newspaper" slogan is both a marketing claim and a statement of intent. The paper's coverage reflects the county's dual character: the great cities of Leeds, Sheffield, Bradford and Hull alongside the Dales, the Moors and one of Britain's most important farming regions. Its agricultural pages, serving Yorkshire's rural economy, are among the most respected in the country, and its business coverage tracks an economy that ranges from Sheffield steel to the Leeds financial district.

The 1923 acquisition of the Leeds Mercury — merged into the Post in 1939 — consolidated the paper's dominance of the Leeds morning market, a position it has never surrendered. Through the Yorkshire Post Newspapers group it remains the anchor of a stable of local weeklies, a reminder of the days when provincial press barons commanded genuine regional power.

The Mitchinson era and the fight for the future

Under editor James Mitchinson, the Yorkshire Post has become one of the most outspoken titles in the debate over the future of local journalism. His 2018 open letter to readers — justifying reader registration and the blocking of ad-blockers on the grounds that journalism "since 1754" had to be paid for — was widely quoted as the clearest statement of the regional press's commercial predicament. Mitchinson has argued consistently that trusted local news is a public good worth paying for, whether through print sales, digital subscriptions or advertising, and the paper's recent audience and revenue growth suggests readers are listening. National World's strategy of automating production — including AI-assisted page design — while pivoting journalists towards premium specialist content is the industry's most aggressive attempt to square the circle of falling print sales and digital economics.

Outlook

With circulation stabilising, digital revenues growing and a new owner in Media Concierge promising investment rather than cuts, the Yorkshire Post's immediate outlook is brighter than most regional titles'. Chairman David Montgomery has staked the company's future on automation of production and premium specialist content — video, business information and events. For a newspaper that has survived since 1754, through the Napoleonic wars, the industrial revolution and the digital revolution, the bet is that "Yorkshire's National Newspaper" can remain exactly that: the county's paper of record for another century.
