About Yuhuan News Net
Yuhuan News Net
Yuhuan News Net (玉环新闻网, Yùhuán Xīnwén Wǎng), formerly known as China Yuhuan News Net (中国玉环新闻网), is the local news website of Yuhuan, a county-level city administered by Taizhou on the southeast coast of Zhejiang Province, China. Published in Chinese at yhnews.zjol.com.cn, it is a branch station of Zhejiang Online, the provincial news portal, and it is operated today by the Yuhuan Media Center, the converged county-level media organisation that runs Yuhuan's newspaper, radio, television, website and new-media services together. The site bills itself with the slogan "Yuhuan's first portal, first online medium" (玉环第一门户,第一网媒), a claim rooted in its history: approved in December 2003 and formally launched on 27 April 2004, it was the first county-level news website in Taizhou. It is one of the very few Zhejiang county news websites to have its own encyclopedia article, reflecting an unusually well-documented two-decade history for an outlet of its size.
Approval and launch, 2003–2004
Yuhuan News Net was approved by the Zhejiang provincial internet information authorities in December 2003 and went live on the morning of 27 April 2004 under the name China Yuhuan News Net. Its original host was the Yuhuan government news office, and its early content introduced and reported on Yuhuan itself — including the customs of its island fishing communities and its folk festivals — alongside general local news. Contemporary accounts identify it as Taizhou's first county-level news website, launched at a time when most Chinese county governments had no dedicated news site of their own. The site marked its third anniversary in 2007, by which point it had become an established part of the local media landscape. The timing of its launch is significant in Yuhuan's media history: the county party newspaper, the Yuhuan News in its earlier incarnation, had printed its last issue on 31 December 2003 under the national press rectification programme, and its staff had been transferred to a new Yuhuan News Information Center. The news website therefore became, from 2004, one of the principal continuing platforms for organised local journalism in Yuhuan.
The city it serves
Yuhuan is a coastal county-level city at the midsection of Zhejiang's southeastern shoreline, in the southern wing of the Yangtze River Delta economic zone. It faces the East China Sea to the east, looks across to Wenzhou in the south, is separated from Yueqing by Yueqing Bay to the west, and borders Wenling to the north. Historically counted among China's island counties, its territory is made up of a mainland peninsula portion and dozens of islands and reefs — 55 islands in all, including Yuhuan Island itself, at about 170 square kilometres the second-largest island in Zhejiang, now connected to the mainland by causeways and reclaimed land. Administratively the city consists of three subdistricts — Yucheng, Damaiyu and Kanmen — six towns, including Chumen, Qinggang and Lupu, and two island townships, Jishan and Haishan, with Yucheng as the administrative and commercial centre. That geography shapes the website's journalism: it is the news service of an island and port community as much as of a manufacturing city.
An island economy on the news agenda
Yuhuan's economy is driven by manufacturing, and the industries that dominate local life also dominate the site's economy coverage. The city is a production base for valves, plumbing and sanitary ware, auto and motorcycle parts and cookware — the nationally known cookware brand Supor originated in Yuhuan — and it hosts the Huaneng Yuhuan Power Station, a major coal-fired plant with about 4,000 megawatts of installed capacity. Alongside industry, the sea remains central: fishing, aquaculture, the port at Damaiyu and the Xuanmen Bay area, whose wetland park was confirmed in 2016 as Taizhou's first national wetland park, all recur in local reporting. Yuhuan has also promoted an island cultural identity, hosting the China Island Culture Festival in 2004 and a second edition in 2009 with delegations from island counties across the mainland and from Taiwan's Kinmen and Penghu. A county news site in such a place covers factory development, fisheries and island tourism as everyday beats rather than specialities, and Yuhuan News Net's original remit — reporting the customs and festivals of the island fishing districts — already reflected that mix.
From government news office to the Yuhuan Media Center
The decisive organisational change in the site's history came on 27 November 2017, when the Yuhuan Media Center (玉环市传媒中心) was formally established. The centre merged the former Yuhuan Radio and Television Station, the Today Yuhuan newspaper and its News Information Center, Yuhuan News Net and Yuhuan People's Radio into a single county-level converged media organisation that operates the city's newspaper, broadcasting, television, website and new-media platforms in a unified way. The centre was built on the base of the radio and television station and retains the station's name externally; it is a public-welfare institution directly under the Yuhuan municipal government, headquartered in the Yuhuan Economic Development Zone, in a media building of about 28,000 square metres with multiple studios, including a variety studio of about 1,000 square metres. Its creation followed the national policy of building county-level media convergence centres, under which Zhejiang aimed for coverage across all of its counties by the end of 2019; Yuhuan's centre was among the earlier ones in Taizhou, preceded in the prefecture only by Sanmen. For Yuhuan News Net, the merger ended its period as a website run by the government news office and made it the web platform of a single integrated newsroom.
Converged publishing and the Wuxian Yuhuan app
The Media Center was designed around what Chinese media managers call a "central kitchen" model — content collected once, produced in multiple forms and distributed across many channels. The launch ceremony for the centre on 27 November 2017 doubled as the launch of its mobile client, the Wuxian Yuhuan (无限玉环, "Infinite Yuhuan") app, which became the centre's flagship mobile outlet alongside the newspaper, the broadcast services and the news website. Under the converged system, the same reporting teams feed Today Yuhuan in print, radio and television programmes, Yuhuan News Net on the web and the app and social accounts on mobile. The centre also reorganised its newspaper: Today Yuhuan was converted from a tabloid format to a large-format paper with a reduced maximum page count. Yuhuan News Net's role in this system is that of the centre's established web portal and archive — the address printed across the centre's services is the site's own yhnews.zjol.com.cn domain, which the centre lists as its official website.
Fifteen years online: the 2019 forum and redesign
In April 2019 Yuhuan hosted the Zhejiang County and District New Media Development Forum, held at the Yuhuan Media Center on 27–28 April 2019 under the guidance of provincial internet information and media bodies and hosted by Zhejiang Online, with the Yuhuan Media Center as organiser. The dates were chosen to coincide with the fifteenth anniversary of Yuhuan News Net, and the site formally relaunched with a redesigned homepage for the occasion. The episode underlined the site's standing within its parent network: of the many county branch stations carried on the Zhejiang Online system, Yuhuan's was selected as the venue and case study for a provincial forum on county new-media development, an unusual distinction that reflects both its early start in 2004 and its early move into converged operation in 2017.
The print sibling: Today Yuhuan
Yuhuan News Net's sister publication, Today Yuhuan (今日玉环), is the organ newspaper of the Yuhuan municipal committee of the Chinese Communist Party, published by the Media Center's news information arm. Its lineage runs back to the Yuhuan Bao founded on 1 July 1956, suspended in 1959 and revived on 15 June 1995. The revived paper was a pioneer among Taizhou county party papers, introducing colour printing in November 2002 and its own distribution network in January 2003, before the national rectification of party newspapers ended its print run at the close of 2003 and its staff moved to the News Information Center to produce a free news paper — the line that leads to today's free, colour, large-format Today Yuhuan, published Monday to Friday with news, general, society and livelihood sections. Because the newspaper, the website and the broadcasters now share one organisation, Yuhuan News Net readers encounter the same newsroom's reporting that appears in the paper, and the paper's journalists' work is distributed online through the site and the app.
Part of the Zhejiang Online network
Yuhuan News Net's domain places it inside Zhejiang Online (浙江在线, zjol.com.cn), the province's only provincial-level key news website and comprehensive portal. Zhejiang Online was formed in December 2002 from the Zhejiang Daily Press Group's website, the provincial publicity office's China Zhejiang Net and the Zhejiang television website, and was brought under Zhejiang Daily Press Group management when its restructuring was completed at the end of 2010. The portal describes itself as Zhejiang's fourth provincial mainstream medium after the provincial newspaper, radio and television services, with daily visits reported in the tens of millions and thousands of items updated daily. Within that system, county and district branch stations such as Yuhuan's provide the local layer: provincial and national news flows down through the network, while the branch station supplies original county reporting under its own name. Yuhuan News Net is in fact the sole entry in the encyclopedia category for Zhejiang Online branch stations, a measure of how few such stations have attracted independent documentation.
What the site publishes
The site's content follows the standard pattern of a Chinese county converged-media portal, applied to Yuhuan's circumstances. Its core output is daily local news: municipal government and party affairs, economic development in the city's manufacturing zones and ports, public services and livelihood issues, society news, and coverage of the towns, subdistricts and island townships. Its founding remit — introducing Yuhuan and reporting the life, customs and festivals of its island fishing areas — survives in its culture and tourism coverage, which ranges over island festivals, seafood and fishing culture, and scenic areas such as Xuanmen Bay. As the Media Center's web platform it also serves as a publication channel for official notices and for the centre's other products, and its reporting is syndicated upward into the Zhejiang Online network and outward through the Wuxian Yuhuan app and the centre's social-media accounts.
Standing and identity
Yuhuan News Net's significance is out of proportion to the size of the city it serves — Yuhuan's registered population is under half a million. It was a genuine first mover, launching in April 2004 as Taizhou's first county-level news website at a moment when its own county newspaper had just been closed by national policy; it survived the transition from a government news office website to a branch station of the provincial portal, and then into one of Zhejiang's earlier county media convergence centres; and it reached its fifteenth anniversary as the host case of a provincial new-media forum. Its slogan, "Yuhuan's first portal, first online medium," is a historical claim as much as a marketing line. Documented through its own encyclopedia entry, the records of the Yuhuan Media Center and the history of Today Yuhuan, it offers one of the clearest available case studies of how a small Chinese island city's news website grew into the web arm of a fully converged county media system.
