About Zee Cinemalu
Zee Cinemalu is a Telugu-language movie channel owned by Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited, headquartered for its operations in Hyderabad. Launched on 4 September 2016 by megastar Chiranjeevi, who unveiled its logo, the channel was the first full-time movie channel in the south Indian market from the Zee bouquet. Built around the brand promise of Dil Pai Super Hit, the channel focuses on Telugu cinema with an emphasis on youthful, content-driven films, and it pioneered the concept of world television premieres among South Indian movie channels. An HD variant, Zee Cinemalu HD, was launched on 31 December 2017. The channel's competitors in the Telugu movie genre include Gemini Movies, Star Maa Movies, ETV Cinema and Star Maa Gold. The launch of Zee Cinemalu on 4 September 2016 came on the same day as the launch of HBO HD in India and a day before the launch of Sony Sab HD, placing it within a wave of new channel launches that reshaped the Indian pay-television market in the mid-2010s.
Launch
Zee Cinemalu was launched on 4 September 2016, with actor Chiranjeevi unveiling the channel's logo at the launch event. The channel entered the Telugu movie space as the fourth player, competing against established movie channels from the Sun, Star and ETV stables. Zee described the launch as the biggest launch of the decade in the Telugu television industry: the channel opened with 122 GRPs and a 22 percent genre share in urban markets, a record-breaking debut for a new channel in the genre. The launch was backed by a library of over 550 films across genres, with a particular strength in movies aimed at younger audiences and content-driven titles.
Brand philosophy
The channel's brand line, Dil Pai Super Hit, was positioned as a promise of stress-busting entertainment for Telugu-speaking audiences. According to the channel's business head Sai Prakash, the philosophy was aimed at inspiring every Telugu-speaking viewer with a superhit stress buster to help them enjoy the ride that life has to offer. The brand identity has emphasised happiness, vibrancy, fun and quirkiness, and the channel refreshed its graphics and packaging on its fifth anniversary in 2021 while retaining the core Dil Pai Super Hit promise. The channel's logo and graphics were aligned with those of Zee Cinema, Zee Picchar and Zee Thirai, the group's other movie channels.
World television premieres
Zee Cinemalu's defining innovation was the introduction of world television premieres to the South Indian movie channel space, becoming the first movie channel in South India to telecast a world television premiere. Its first such premiere was Kumari 21F, a youth-oriented love story starring Raj Tarun and Hebah Patel with music by Devi Sri Prasad, which premiered on the channel on 15 October 2016 at 8 pm. The premiere was supported by a major marketing campaign involving the film's cast and crew, print advertisements, radio spots and social media promotion. The success of the concept established world television premieres as a regular feature of the channel's schedule and a key differentiator in the Telugu movie genre.
7 Days 7 Premieres and event programming
The channel also introduced the property of 7 Days 7 Premieres, telecasting seven premieres on seven consecutive days during the festive week of Dussehra from 1 to 7 October in its launch year, a first among South Indian movie channels. This event-based approach to premieres became a recurring feature of the channel's festive programming. Other signature properties have included Saturday Mega Movie, Friday Blockbuster and 9 Days 9 Blockbusters, packaging the channel's film library into branded weekly and seasonal events. The channel has experimented with showcasing 11 movies per day and with packaging 17 stories to bring a unique mix of stories each hour on a single day.
Film library and programming strategy
Zee Cinemalu's programming strategy centres on its library of Telugu films, with an emphasis on movies for the younger generation and content-driven titles rather than relying solely on big-star vehicles. The channel has noted that it managed to turn small theatrical releases into big television successes, citing films such as Mathangi, Idi Maa Prema Katha, Vasuki and London Babulu as examples of modest box-office performers that found large audiences on the channel. With movies accounting for 34 percent of total Telugu television viewership, the channel positioned its varied library as its core strength. The channel also launched a bilingual website, described as the first ever by a movie channel, carrying film news, gossip, box office reviews and photographs of film stars.
Ratings performance
After its record-breaking launch, the channel consolidated its position in the Telugu movie genre. In its second year, Zee Cinemalu stood at number one in urban markets with 185 GRPs and a 27.2 percent genre share, and number one in Hyderabad with 223 GRPs and a 30.7 percent genre share, averaged over twelve weeks from week 23 to week 34 of 2018. On its fifth anniversary, the company stated that the channel stood at the number two position in urban markets. By its seventh anniversary in September 2023, Zee reported that the channel contributed a 23.5 percent share of overall Telugu movie viewership on television and was the number one reach channel in the movie genre with 57.5 percent reach.
HD launch and distribution
Zee Cinemalu HD was launched on 31 December 2017, alongside Zee Telugu HD, coinciding with a rebranding and logo change across the Zee network. The HD variant carries the same programming in high definition and has continued to deliver the premium viewing experience to the channel's audience. The channel is distributed on cable and direct-to-home platforms across the Telugu-speaking states and nationally, and its content is also available on ZEE5, the Zee group's streaming platform.
Anniversaries and milestones
The channel celebrated its second anniversary in September 2018, marking two years since its inception with the Dil Pai Super Hit brand line. Its fifth anniversary in September 2021 was marked by the launch of a brand anthem on 4 September, composed and sung by Rama Krishna Miriyala, along the lines of the Raa Raa Mama Chuddam ZEE Cinema anthem, together with a new brand identity and refreshed graphics. The seventh anniversary in September 2023 was celebrated as a milestone of seven years of bringing Telugu cinema to television audiences, with the channel's chief channel officer B. V. Sai Prakash describing the journey as one of cinematic magic and storytelling and thanking the channel's viewers for their support.
Place in the Zee network
Zee Cinemalu was the first movie channel in the south market from the Zee Entertainment bouquet and the group's dedicated Telugu movie offering, complementing Zee Telugu, the group's Telugu general entertainment channel. Within the Zee network's movie portfolio, it sits alongside Zee Cinema and &Pictures in Hindi, Zee Talkies and Zee Chitramandir in Marathi, Zee Thirai in Tamil and Zee Picchar in Kannada. The channel's success in Telugu informed the group's subsequent launches of regional movie channels, including Zee Thirai and Zee Picchar in 2020.
Current status
Zee Cinemalu continues to operate as a full-time Telugu movie channel under Zee Entertainment Enterprises, broadcasting in standard and high definition from Hyderabad. Nearly a decade after its launch, it remains one of the leading Telugu movie channels, built on its library of Telugu films, its world television premiere properties and its Dil Pai Super Hit brand, and available on television platforms and the ZEE5 streaming service.
