About Zee Marathi

Zee Bangla is the Bengali-language general entertainment channel of Zee Entertainment Enterprises that pioneered Bengali satellite television in India — launched on 15 September 1999 as Alpha TV Bangla, the first Bengali-language satellite television channel in the country, and renamed Zee Bangla on 28 March 2005. Headquartered in Kolkata, it has been one of the two dominant forces in Bengali television for more than two decades, locked in a celebrated rivalry with Star Jalsha for the top of the ratings. Its programming blends long-running family serials with a formidable non-fiction slate: the dance reality show Dance Bangla Dance, the music competition Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, the comedy franchise Mirakkel, the women's game show Didi No. 1 and the quiz show Dadagiri Unlimited, whose first host was cricket legend Sourav Ganguly in his first-ever television anchoring role. With a sister movie channel in Zee Bangla Cinema, an HD feed launched in November 2016, and deep distribution across India and Bangladesh, Zee Bangla is the elder statesman of Bengali entertainment — the channel that created the market its competitors now fight over.

History: Alpha TV Bangla to Zee Bangla

Zee Bangla was launched on 15 September 1999 as Alpha TV Bangla, part of Zee's "Alpha" bouquet of regional channels that also included Alpha TV Marathi, Alpha TV Telugu and Alpha TV Punjabi. It was the first Bengali-language satellite television channel in India — a landmark for a language community whose television diet until then had been limited to Doordarshan's Bengali programming and a handful of local cable offerings. The channel was the Zee network's second regional channel to go on air, and from the beginning it set out to uphold Bengal's culture for a global audience, crafting programmes to suit the varied tastes of Bengalis in West Bengal, Bangladesh, Assam, Tripura and the diaspora.

The early years were a period of experimentation. An early comedy show, Raja and Gaja, aired on the channel before switching stations; daily soaps and film-based programming gradually built the schedule. On 28 March 2005 the channel was renamed Zee Bangla, aligning it with the Zee masterbrand — a rebranding it shared with its Marathi sibling, which became Zee Marathi on the same day. The rename marked the channel's coming of age: no longer an experiment in the Alpha bouquet, it was now a core Zee property competing head-on for Bengali leadership.

Ownership and corporate structure

Zee Bangla is owned by Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (ZEEL), the Mumbai-based media company founded by Subhash Chandra and part of the Essel Group, which claims to reach more than 1.3 billion viewers across 173 countries. Within ZEEL the channel is run by a dedicated Bengali cluster with its own business head and content leadership — at various times figures such as Samrat Ghosh have headed the channel — operating alongside sister properties including the flagship Hindi channel Zee TV. The Kolkata headquarters, long located at Park Plaza on Park Street, anchors the channel's deep roots in Bengal's cultural capital.

Being part of ZEEL gives Zee Bangla access to the network's national resources — format libraries, production expertise and the ZEE5 streaming platform — while its programming remains distinctly Bengali in sensibility. The channel's content is also available on ZEE5, where its serials and reality shows reach Bengali viewers who have cut the cord or live outside the broadcast footprint.

Programming: fiction serials

Zee Bangla's fiction slate has produced some of the most beloved serials in Bengali television history. Early landmark soaps included Khela, Ek Din Pratidin, Rashi, Keya Patar Nouko, Saat Pake Badha, Agnipariksha and Subarnalata — dramas that reflected Bengali ethos, from joint-family sagas to stories of women's resilience, in what the channel described as a never-before manner. These shows built the channel's reputation for emotionally rich, culturally rooted storytelling and made its prime-time serials appointment viewing for Bengali families.

The fiction strategy has remained consistent: strong female protagonists, family-centric narratives and production values that set the standard for the language. The current lineup continues the tradition with daily soaps such as Parineeta, Kusum, Kone Dekha Alo, Jowar Bhata, Kamala Nibas, Anondi and the revived Saat Paake Bandha, alongside dubbed mythological programming. The channel refreshes its fiction slate regularly, launching new serials with festival-season marketing pushes and giving successful shows long runs that can stretch for years.

Non-fiction: reality and game shows

Zee Bangla was a pioneer in Bengali reality television, and its non-fiction franchises remain among the most successful in any Indian regional language. Dance Bangla Dance, the dance competition, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, the singing competition (running in its 2025–26 season), and Mirakkel, the stand-up comedy show anchored for years by Mir, gave birth to a generation of Bengali stars and set the template that competitors would follow. These shows combined mass entertainment with genuine talent discovery, and their winners and contestants have gone on to careers in film, music and television.

The channel's celebrity-driven game shows are equally formidable. Didi No. 1, the women's game show, has run for ten seasons — the tenth, hosted by Swastika Mukherjee, airing in 2026 with a format celebrating women's ambition and financial empowerment — and remains a household favourite. Dadagiri Unlimited, the quiz show, made history when Sourav Ganguly took on hosting duties, his first anchoring role on Indian television; the show's blend of general knowledge, physical challenges and Ganguly's charisma made it a ratings phenomenon. Banglar Sera Paribar marked another first, with megastar Prosenjit Chatterjee anchoring television for the first time. Rannaghar, the cookery show, rounds out a non-fiction slate that covers every daypart and demographic.

Ratings and the Star Jalsha rivalry

For most of its history Zee Bangla's principal rival has been Star Jalsha, and together the two channels account for the overwhelming majority of Bengali television viewership. Zee Bangla held the leadership position in the early years; Star Jalsha, launched in September 2008, overtook it and remained the most-watched Bengali channel for nine years from 2009 until June 2018, when Zee Bangla reclaimed the top spot. The lead has changed hands since, but the duopoly endures: in February 2020 Zee Bangla was one of the largest Bengali-language television channels in India by viewership, and the two channels' fiction and non-fiction slates continue to define the language's television culture.

The rivalry has been good for Bengali television, driving investment in production quality, original formats and marketing. Zee Bangla's response to competition has been to double down on its strengths — the reality franchises, the star-anchored game shows and culturally rooted fiction — and to use its HD feed and digital presence to reach younger audiences. Other competitors, including Colors Bangla, Sony Aath, Aakash Aath, Rupashi Bangla and Sun Bangla, fight for the remaining share, but the market remains a two-horse race.

Sister channels and HD

On 23 September 2012 Zee Bangla launched Zee Bangla Cinema, West Bengal's first Bengali movie channel, giving the network a dedicated outlet for Bengali films and freeing the main channel's schedule for original programming. The movie channel carries a library of Bengali cinema — from classics to recent theatrical releases — and its premieres and film festivals are ratings events in their own right. On 20 November 2016 the channel launched Zee Bangla HD, its high-definition simulcast, bringing cinematic picture quality to its serials and reality shows.

The bouquet strategy allows Zee to segment the Bengali audience: flagship fiction and reality on Zee Bangla, cinema on Zee Bangla Cinema, and catch-up and exclusive digital content on ZEE5. The channel also maintains its own YouTube presence, where clips of serials and reality shows reach millions of viewers beyond the broadcast footprint.

Brand identity and cultural role

Zee Bangla's brand has evolved through several on-air identities, including the new graphics unveiled during Sa Re Ga Ma Pa in October 2018, but its core positioning has been constant: the channel of Bengali culture, upholding the language's literary and artistic traditions on television. Its serials have adapted works resonant with Bengali literature and social history; its reality shows have celebrated the state's musical heritage; and its festival programming around Durga Puja — the biggest cultural event in Bengal — is among the most elaborate on Indian television.

The channel's role in Bangladesh deserves special mention: Zee Bangla has a large following across the border, where Bengali-language Indian channels command significant audiences. In September 2021 Bangladesh imposed a blackout on foreign television channels that broadcast commercials, including Zee Bangla; two weeks later the channel resumed broadcasting in Bangladesh without commercials, a testament to the strength of viewer demand. The episode underscored how deeply the channel is embedded in Bengali cultural life on both sides of the border.

Digital presence

Zee Bangla's digital strategy centres on ZEE5, where its serials stream as catch-up episodes and its reality shows reach binge viewers; the platform has made the channel's library available to the Bengali diaspora in the Middle East, Europe and North America. The channel's social media and YouTube channels carry highlights, behind-the-scenes content and full episodes, extending the life of its programming beyond broadcast. The Didi No. 1 and Sa Re Ga Ma Pa franchises in particular generate enormous digital engagement, with performance clips routinely going viral.

The digital push also serves a defensive purpose: as younger Bengali viewers migrate to streaming, Zee Bangla's presence on ZEE5 keeps its content in their consideration set and provides data on viewing preferences that feeds back into programming decisions. The channel's website and app integrations offer programme guides, contest registrations and fan engagement around its reality properties.

Challenges and outlook

Zee Bangla faces the familiar pressures of Indian regional television: a relentless rival in Star Jalsha, fragmentation from streaming and YouTube, and the rising cost of talent and production. The broader corporate context adds uncertainty — ZEEL's proposed merger with Sony Pictures Networks India collapsed, leaving the company to chart an independent course, and the regional channels must compete for investment within a tighter corporate budget.

Yet the channel's fundamentals are strong: a quarter-century of brand equity, the most successful reality franchises in Bengali television, a deep fiction library and a loyal audience that spans two countries. The strategy for the years ahead is clear from its recent moves — new seasons of Didi No. 1 and Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, refreshed fiction slates, HD and digital distribution — to defend the leadership it has held, on and off, since 1999. As the first Bengali satellite channel, Zee Bangla created the market; its ambition now is to keep leading it.
