About Zeit für Genuss

Zeit für Genuss

Zeit für Genuss is an Austrian culinary magazine published in Vienna by the Österreichischer Agrarverlag. It first appeared in spring 2005 under the name Genuss.Magazin; Genuss.Magazin is its former name, not a separate title, and the two names describe one continuous magazine. In November 2017 it was relaunched as a magazine of origin and region, and in 2021 it was relaunched again and renamed Zeit für Genuss. It now appears four times a year with issues of 100 to 140 pages, devoted to food and wine culture and to regional food and drink. Its family of line extensions began with GENUSS.wein.pur in 2006, GENUSS.bier.pur in 2007 and GENUSS.fleisch.pur in 2009, and the wine title continues today as wein.pur within the publisher's GENUSS group, led in the publisher's media data by editor-in-chief Johannes Rottensteiner for Zeit für Genuss and Birgit Kowarik as object management and wein.pur editor-in-chief.

Spring 2005: Genuss.Magazin

The magazine first appeared in spring 2005 as Genuss.Magazin, published by the Österreichischer Agrarverlag in Vienna. Reference sources on the publishing house agree on that founding: in spring 2005 the Genuss.Magazin appeared, devoted above all to culinary themes. The launch placed the Agrarverlag — a house whose heartland was agricultural and forestry trade publishing — directly in the consumer pleasure market, with a magazine for people who cook, eat and drink with attention. Austria in 2005 was in the middle of a broad regional-food movement, with the state's Genuss Regionen initiative, launched the same year by the agriculture ministry with the Agrarmarkt Austria and the federal provinces, designating regions by their characteristic quality foods; the new magazine spoke to exactly the readership that movement created.

Because the magazine was later renamed, catalogue entries and older references under Genuss.Magazin and newer ones under Zeit für Genuss refer to the same publication. Any history that treated them as two magazines would double-count the title and misdate both.

The GENUSS family: wein.pur, bier.pur, fleisch.pur

The magazine quickly became the parent of a family of special-interest extensions. GENUSS.wein.pur began in 2006, GENUSS.bier.pur in 2007 and GENUSS.fleisch.pur in 2009, each taking one pleasure — wine, beer, meat — and treating it in the depth the quarterly parent could not. Of these, the wine line proved the most durable: wein.pur continues today as a magazine in its own right inside the publisher's GENUSS group, with its own editor-in-chief, its own guide-format bookazines and an e-paper edition, and a wein.pur section forms part of the present Zeit für Genuss offer.

The extension strategy is characteristic of the Agrarverlag's knowledge of its audiences: the same household that reads about regional food buys wine, and the publisher's agricultural roots give its wine and meat coverage a producer's perspective — vineyards, breweries and farms are its home territory, not exotic locations.

November 2017: the origin and region relaunch

In November 2017 the magazine was relaunched as a Herkunfts- und Regionalmagazin — a magazine of origin and region. That relaunch, recorded in Austria-Forum and the publisher's records, sharpened the title's identity: food was to be covered through where it comes from, the landscapes, farms and makers behind it, rather than as anonymous recipes. The shift matched the direction of Austrian food culture in those years, in which origin labelling, regional brands and farm-direct marketing had become the dominant language of quality.

The 2017 relaunch is a date that profiles sometimes miss, jumping directly from 2005 to the 2021 rename. It matters because it explains what Zeit für Genuss later inherited: the renamed magazine of 2021 was already, by editorial concept, a regional-origin magazine, and the new name was placed on a product whose content had been repositioned four years earlier.

2021: renamed Zeit für Genuss

In 2021 the magazine was relaunched and renamed Zeit für Genuss — time for pleasure, or time for enjoyment. The Agrarverlag's own reference record states it plainly: after a relaunch in 2021 the Genuss.Magazin was renamed Zeit für Genuss. The new name generalises the old one — from the noun Genuss with its magazine suffix to a promise of time devoted to enjoyment — and it fronts the publisher's consumer branding across the title's shop and website, zeitfuergenuss.at.

The rename did not break continuity. The magazine continued as the Agrarverlag's culinary quarterly with its GENUSS group organisation, its wein.pur companion and its distribution channels, under new branding. Readers holding a 2005 Genuss.Magazin and a current Zeit für Genuss hold the first and latest forms of a single magazine.

Four times a year, 100 to 140 pages

Zeit für Genuss now appears four times a year, in issues of 100 to 140 pages — a book-like quarterly rather than a slim monthly. The publisher's media data prices the combined Zeit für Genuss and wein.pur magazine at 4.90 euros in Austria and Germany in the edition quoted, and the publisher's shop sells current single issues — issue 3/2026, for example, at 6.90 euros — with their full contents displayed. The shop description of that autumn issue shows the magazine's current recipe-led abundance: a pumpkin focus from savoury to sweet, a strudel feature covering filled strudels far beyond apple with dough guidance, a jam and preserving focus with tastings, a tasting of Leberkäse varieties, the wein.pur journey to the Wachau with a report on natural wine, a culinary journey to South Tyrol, and 55 recipes in total.

Such contents listings are the most reliable public evidence of the magazine's present character: seasonal Austrian cooking treated generously, regional journeys in Austria and its neighbouring food cultures, product tastings, and wine integrated as part of the table rather than separated as a hobby.

Editorial line and people

The publisher's media data states the magazine's Blattlinie, its editorial line, as the promotion of food and wine culture and of regional food and drink — Förderung der Ess- und Weinkultur sowie regionaler Lebens- und Genussmittel. The same media data names the GENUSS group's leadership: Winfried Eberl as publishing director and head of the GENUSS group, Johannes Rottensteiner as editor-in-chief of Zeit für Genuss, Birgit Kowarik as object manager for Zeit für Genuss and editor-in-chief of wein.pur, with Karin Vratny as deputy editor-in-chief of wein.pur. The publishing house's registered address in that material is Sturzgasse 1A, 1140 Vienna.

Media data are revised periodically, and staff in such roles change; the names above are those of the publisher's 2024 media documentation and are given with that dating. For the current imprint, the magazine's own website and latest media kit are the authoritative sources.

Distribution through the Agrarverlag family

The publisher's media data describes an unusual and revealing distribution for Zeit für Genuss: it is distributed as a supplement in other Agrarverlag titles — holzbau austria, GARTEN+HAUS, the REISEN-Magazin and Pferderevue — as well as by dispatch to the GENUSS distribution list. The wein.pur magazine is likewise distributed as a supplement in trade titles and to the GENUSS list. That model puts the culinary magazine into households already reading the house's garden, travel, equestrian and building titles — readers with houses, gardens, animals and kitchens — rather than relying mainly on newsstand sales.

Supplement distribution also explains the magazine's economics and its page counts: a quarterly of 100 to 140 pages carried inside established subscription titles reaches a large, demographically apt audience at low marginal cost, and advertisers buy access to that combined readership.

wein.pur today

wein.pur, born in 2006 as GENUSS.wein.pur, is today the wine arm of the GENUSS group: a magazine, an annual guide in bookazine form priced in the publisher's data at 14.90 euros across Austria, Germany, Italy and Luxembourg, and an e-paper edition. Its content is integrated with Zeit für Genuss — the autumn 2026 issue's wein.pur part travels to the Wachau, one of Austria's most important wine landscapes, and examines natural wine — so that wine coverage reaches the food magazine's whole audience rather than only self-declared wine specialists.

The older extensions bier.pur (2007) and fleisch.pur (2009) belong to the magazine's history as documented line extensions; the sources used for this profile do not show them as current separate titles in the present GENUSS group materials, and no current status is asserted for them beyond that documented origin.

The publisher: from farm paper to pleasure

The Österreichischer Agrarverlag, Zeit für Genuss's publisher, was founded in 1928 in Vienna and is owned, since December 2023, by the Raiffeisen-Holding Niederösterreich-Wien, with around eighty employees and a portfolio spanning agricultural trade titles, forestry and timber magazines, garden, leisure, culinary, food and property media. Zeit für Genuss is the consumer face of that portfolio's food knowledge: the same house that publishes for farmers, vintners and foresters publishes, in this title, for the people who eat what they produce.

That producer-to-table position distinguishes Zeit für Genuss from culinary magazines published by general consumer houses. Its regionalism is not a marketing costume but the worldview of a publisher whose other readers grow the food.

Current status and reading the record

Zeit für Genuss remains in publication from Vienna as the Agrarverlag's culinary quarterly, appearing four times a year with 100 to 140 pages, sold and subscribed through zeitfuergenuss.at and distributed additionally as a supplement within the publisher's title family, with wein.pur as its wine companion. Its complete documented timeline is short enough to state in one breath — Genuss.Magazin founded spring 2005; wein.pur 2006, bier.pur 2007, fleisch.pur 2009; relaunched as an origin and region magazine in November 2017; renamed Zeit für Genuss in 2021 — and accurate profiles should state it whole, under the current name, with the former name clearly marked as former.

Two cautions follow for anyone citing the magazine. First, Genuss.Magazin must never be listed as a separate, additional Agrarverlag culinary title alongside Zeit für Genuss; it is this magazine's own earlier name. Second, figures and staff should be quoted from dated publisher media data, as this profile does, because prices, distribution partners and editorial roles in a working magazine group change between media-kit years.
