Zeitschrift für das gesamte Kreditwesen
The Zeitschrift für das gesamte Kreditwesen is one of Germany's oldest and most established specialist journals for banking and finance, published in Frankfurt am Main by the Fritz Knapp Verlag. Appearing twice a month since 1948, it covers the full range of the credit and financial system: banks, stock exchanges, financial markets, monetary policy, financial supervision and currency policy. As an official gazette of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, it carries regulatory announcements alongside essays by practitioners, lawyers and academics, making it a fixture of German financial publishing for more than 75 years.
Overview
The Zeitschrift für das gesamte Kreditwesen, commonly abbreviated ZfgK, is a trade journal for the banking and financial sector published by the Fritz Knapp Verlag GmbH in Frankfurt am Main. It appears twice monthly, on the 1st and the 15th of each month, and its print edition carries the ISSN 0341-4019. In 2025 the journal reached its 78th volume, a run of continuous publication that makes it one of the longest-running financial periodicals in the German language.
The journal's readership consists of professionals in banks and financial institutions, financial regulators and supervisors, lawyers specializing in banking and capital markets law, academics in banking and finance, and decision-makers in companies and public institutions concerned with financial matters. Its content combines current reporting with in-depth analysis: specialist articles on stock exchanges, financial authorities, financial supervision, financial markets, monetary policy, credit institutions, non-bank financial actors and currency policy, alongside essays by practitioners, legal experts and scholars.
A distinctive institutional feature of the journal is its status as one of the official gazettes, or Pflichtblätter, of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. In this capacity it publishes stock exchange news, company data and central bank announcements, giving it a quasi-official function in the German capital market alongside its journalistic and academic content. The journal is led by Philipp Otto as editor-in-chief and publisher, with Carsten Englert as managing editor. Its online presence is centered on kreditwesen.de, which offers an e-paper archive of past issues.
History
The Zeitschrift für das gesamte Kreditwesen was first published in August 1948, in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War and the currency reform that created the Deutsche Mark. The first issues were brought out by the Drei Kreise Verlag, but the decisive step came on 1 January 1949, when the publisher Fritz Knapp (1880-1962) founded the Fritz Knapp Verlag in Frankfurt am Main and took over the journal. Knapp, together with Walter Hofmann, had been behind the founding of the publication, and under his imprint the journal began the continuous run that has lasted to the present day.
The early years of the journal coincided with the reconstruction of the German banking system and the re-establishment of Frankfurt as the country's financial center. One of the first essays published in the journal came from Volkmar Muthesius, a prominent economic journalist of the post-war era. Over the following decades, the journal documented the major debates of German banking: in 1971 Hans Büschgen argued in its pages for the preservation of the universal banking system, in 1986 he published two installments on money market funds, and in 1993 Jürgen Krumnow addressed the emerging topic of derivatives. In 1996 the journal carried an essay on the recommendations of the Basel Committee on market risk, reflecting its role as a forum for the regulatory debates that have shaped modern banking supervision.
The journal's publishing program extended beyond the main title. Over the years it produced special editions and supplements, including a special-edition series, the "Beiträge zur Bankgeschichte" (contributions to banking history) published from 1964 to 1986, the supplement "Bank und Markt" in the 1970s and early 1980s, and an archive of banking-law decisions. It also experimented with international editions: a French special edition appeared in 1952, and an English partial translation was published under the title "Journal of finance and credits" in 1950. These ventures reflected the journal's ambition to serve as a bridge between the German banking world and international finance.
Content and Sections
Each issue of the Zeitschrift für das gesamte Kreditwesen covers the breadth of the financial system. The specialist articles address stock exchanges and securities trading, financial authorities and supervision, financial markets and their regulation, monetary policy and central banking, credit institutions and their business models, non-bank financial intermediaries and currency policy, both national and international. The journal publishes essays by practitioners from banks and financial institutions, by lawyers specializing in banking and capital markets law and by academics, giving it a blend of practical, legal and scholarly perspectives.
Personnel news forms a regular feature: the journal reports on appointments, retirements and career moves among the people of the financial world, serving as a chronicle of the industry's leadership. In its capacity as an official gazette of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, it publishes stock exchange announcements, company data and central bank communications, which makes individual issues a reference source for market participants. The combination of current news, analytical essays and official announcements gives the journal a density of information that has sustained its readership through more than seven decades.
The journal's long history has also made it a record of German financial history. Its archives contain the debates that accompanied the development of the German banking system: the defense of universal banking, the arrival of money market funds, the growth of derivatives markets, the Basel accords on capital adequacy and market risk, and the Europeanization of banking supervision. For historians of German finance, the journal's back issues form a primary source of exceptional continuity.
Publisher and Organization
The Zeitschrift für das gesamte Kreditwesen is published by the Fritz Knapp Verlag GmbH in Frankfurt am Main, a specialist publishing house for banking and financial literature founded by Fritz Knapp on 1 January 1949. The publishing house has remained closely associated with the journal throughout its history, and the two are effectively synonymous in the German financial publishing landscape. The current editor-in-chief and publisher is Philipp Otto, who combines the editorial leadership of the journal with the management of the publishing house; the managing editor is Carsten Englert.
The journal's status as a Pflichtblatt, an official gazette, of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange gives it an institutional role beyond that of a normal trade publication. This function requires reliability, continuity and editorial independence, qualities that the journal has maintained through changes in ownership structures, regulatory regimes and media technology. The Fritz Knapp Verlag also publishes banking literature beyond the journal, including works on banking history and specialist monographs, but the Zeitschrift für das gesamte Kreditwesen remains its flagship title. Current circulation figures are not publicly confirmed in the sources consulted.
Digital Presence
The journal's online home is kreditwesen.de, where the publisher presents the current issues and maintains an e-paper archive of past numbers. The archive, which documents the journal's recent volumes issue by issue, makes the publication's long run accessible to subscribers and researchers, and it serves as a digital reference for the banking and financial community. The online edition complements the print journal, which continues to appear twice monthly, preserving the rhythm that has characterized the publication since 1949.
For a specialist journal whose readership consists of banking professionals, regulators and academics, the digital offering functions primarily as a working tool: subscribers can consult current issues, search the archive and follow the regulatory announcements published in the journal's capacity as a stock exchange gazette. The publisher's website also serves as the point of contact for subscriptions and for the publishing house's broader program of banking literature. The combination of a stable print core, a quasi-official institutional function and a digital archive positions the Zeitschrift für das gesamte Kreditwesen as a fixture of German financial publishing that has adapted to the digital age without abandoning the periodicity and authority that have defined it for more than 75 years.
