About Zillo

Zillo

Zillo — the German alternative music and culture magazine, published in print from 1989 to 2014 and revived in 2026 as an online-only medium — is the veteran of the German dark scene's press: the monthly that documented gothic, electro, industrial and metal culture for a quarter-century, was destroyed by a 2014 fire, and returned twelve years later with a new editorial team under the motto "ZILLO ist zurück" (ZILLO is back).

Overview

Zillo is a German magazine dedicated to alternative music and culture, with its main focus on the gothic, electronic, industrial and metal scenes. The magazine appeared from 1989; its editorial office was in Ratekau, Schleswig-Holstein. The last print issue was the December 2013/January 2014 edition; the magazine's ISSN was 1048-3061 and its website is zillo.de.

In 2014 a fire destroyed the magazine's entire infrastructure — including the editorial office and the warehouse with its products — and publication was suspended indefinitely. In 2026 the brand returned: zillo.de proclaims "ZILLO ist zurück!", with a new editorial team, a community presence on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Spotify, Deezer and Tidal, an online shop, and the promise "ZILLO – Von der Szene für die Szene" (ZILLO – from the scene for the scene).

History

Zillo was founded in 1989 — at the height of the German dark wave's creative explosion, when the Schwarze Szene was developing its own press alongside its own clubs, labels and festivals. The monthly magazine became one of the three defining music magazines of the German dark scene, alongside Orkus (founded 1995) and Sonic Seducer — the veteran of the trio, documenting the scene from its late-1980s underground through the 1990s commercialization to the 2000s diversification. The magazine's authority in the scene's history was such that its "Zillo Report" series on gothic history — including Mick Mercer's contributions in the mid-1990s — became reference points for the genre's historiography, cited in the scholarly literature on gothic rock.

For 25 years, Zillo was the scene's monthly chronicle: the interviews with the bands that defined dark music, the reviews, the sampler CDs, the scene reports from the clubs and festivals. The magazine's editorial office in Ratekau, Schleswig-Holstein — far from the Berlin-Leipzig-Cologne axis of the scene — gave it an outsider's independence within the subculture it served.

The magazine's 25-year print run ended not with a business decision but with a disaster: in 2014 a fire burned down the entire infrastructure of the magazine, including the editorial office and the warehouse with its stock. Publication was suspended indefinitely — the scene's oldest magazine, gone overnight. The last print issue had been the December 2013/January 2014 edition; there was no farewell issue, no final editorial — just the fire, and then silence.

The return came in 2026, twelve years later. As the scene press reported in March 2026: the beloved magazine, discontinued years earlier after various difficulties, had a new editorial team and was starting afresh — with new contributions appearing on the magazine's Facebook page (zillo1989), including the playlist of the Mystic Sampler in the "Phoenix Edition" and photos of the first virtual editorial meeting. The phoenix edition's name was programmatic: Zillo rising from the ashes of the 2014 fire. The revival's first visible products were digital and communal: the playlists, the social-media presence, the online shop — the magazine rebuilding its relationship with its scene before anything else.

Content and Concept

The classic Zillo covered alternative music and culture with a focus on the gothic, electronic, industrial and metal scenes — interviews, reviews, scene reports and the sampler CDs (including the Mystic Sampler series) that made each issue a music object. The magazine's concept was the scene's culture in the round: not just the music but the aesthetics, the clubs, the fashion and the community. The "Zillo Report" features — including the multi-part gothic history published in the mid-1990s — gave the magazine a historiographical dimension unusual in the music press: Zillo didn't just report the scene, it wrote its history.

The 2026 online revival continues the brand as a digital medium: the community on social platforms and streaming services (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Spotify, Deezer, Tidal), the online shop with reissued classic motifs — "Viva la Muerte", "Carpe Noctem", "Strange People Crossing", "Erdarbeiten" and "Normale Leute machen wir Angst" on T-shirts, hoodies, mugs and more — and, as the site promises, "many plans and ideas" to come. The merch strategy is itself a statement: the first five favorite motifs of past decades, reissued — the brand's visual heritage as the foundation of its return. The streaming presence (Spotify, Deezer, Tidal playlists, including the Mystic Sampler's "Phoenix Edition") continues the sampler tradition in digital form: the magazine as curator, now on the platforms where the scene listens.

Coverage and Audience

The classic Zillo appeared monthly, in German, from Ratekau. Its audience was the Schwarze Szene — the German dark scene: fans of gothic rock, dark wave, electro, industrial and metal, the subculture the magazine served for 25 years. As one of the top three music magazines of the scene, Zillo was the veteran voice — the magazine the scene's older generation grew up with, the title that had been there since 1989, before Orkus and alongside the scene's own maturation from underground to festival culture.

The 2026 online edition addresses the same scene in its current form: the dark-scene community on social media and streaming platforms, the festival-goers, the collectors of the classic motifs. The revival's community-first approach — social channels before print — reflects how the scene now communicates: on Facebook and Instagram, on Spotify and YouTube, in the digital spaces where the Schwarze Szene lives today. The reissued merch motifs speak to the scene's memory culture: "Viva la Muerte" and "Carpe Noctem" are not just designs but artifacts of the scene's shared history, worn again by a new generation.

Ownership

The 2026 Zillo operates with a new editorial team under the zillo.de brand — "from the scene for the scene," as the site's motto puts it. Details of the revived operation's corporate structure have not been publicly confirmed; the brand's return is organized around the website, the social-media community and the online shop.

Digital Presence

zillo.de is the revived brand's home: "ZILLO ist zurück!" — the community on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Spotify, Deezer and Tidal, the online shop with reissued classic designs, and the promise of more to come. The 2026 revival is online-only: no print edition has been announced, and the brand's return takes the form of digital content, community and merchandise — the scene's magazine reimagined for the platform era. The website's "many plans and ideas" promise suggests the revival is just beginning: the phoenix has risen, and its next flight is being planned.

From 1989 to 2014 in print, from 2026 online: Zillo is the phoenix of the German dark-scene press — destroyed by fire, revived by its scene. "ZILLO ist zurück": twelve years after the flames, the veteran is back — von der Szene, für die Szene. The new editorial team's virtual meetings, the Mystic Sampler's Phoenix Edition, the reissued classic motifs: the revival is built from the scene's own materials, for the scene's own people — the magazine that documented the Schwarze Szene for 25 years, now writing its next chapter online — the veteran of the dark-scene press, back where it belongs, for the scene, since 1989.
