Kansas Public Radio

Kansas Public Radio is the University of Kansas's public radio service — flagship station KANU 91.5 FM in Lawrence, on the air since September 15, 1952, and a charter member of NPR.

About Kansas Public Radio

Kansas Public Radio began its broadcast life as KANU-FM, signing on September 15, 1952, at 1:45 p.m. with a donated FM transmitter, while Harry Truman was still president. It was among the earliest noncommercial stations in the country — in 1961 it became the first noncommercial FM station to broadcast in stereo — and in 1971 it became a charter member of National Public Radio, carrying the first broadcast of All Things Considered.

Today KPR is a seven-station network licensed to the University of Kansas, with full-power stations in Lawrence (KANU 91.5), Emporia (KANH 89.7), Olsburg/Junction City (KANV 91.3), and Chanute (KANQ 90.3), plus translators in Atchison and Manhattan. Its 100,000-watt flagship signal covers northeastern and central Kansas, reaches into the Kansas City metro, and doubles as the main NPR station for the state capital, Topeka.

KPR is a Peabody Award winner and has earned the Kansas Association of Broadcasters' Station of the Year award a record 19 times — more than any other Kansas station. It draws more than 100,000 weekly listeners, most of its operating budget from listener-members and business sponsors, and broadcasts from KU's Broadcasting Hall in Lawrence under general manager Feloniz Lovato-Winston.
