About Central Florida Public Media

WMFE-FM first signed on July 14, 1980, as the NPR member station for Central Florida, owned by the nonprofit Community Communications, Inc. The call letters stand for "Mid-Florida Educational." Broadcasting at 90.7 MHz with 100,000 watts from a transmitter in Bithlo, it became metro Orlando's primary provider of NPR programming, operating from the Hugh F. McKean Public Broadcasting Center on East Colonial Drive. In March 2018 it expanded with WMFV 89.5 FM, bringing NPR service to The Villages, Leesburg, and the Golden Triangle.

In April 2024 the organization rebranded: WMFE became Central Florida Public Media, adopting a new megaphone logo and a blue-and-green palette to reflect its role as the only local nonprofit news organization covering its nine-county region. The station call signs remain WMFE-FM and WMFV, but the public-facing name now emphasizes the organization's multimedia footprint beyond its broadcast frequencies.

Today Central Florida Public Media is a listener-supported nonprofit operating 90.7 WMFE-FM (news and information), 90.7-2 Classical, and 89.5 WMFV. Its national programming comes from NPR, American Public Media, Public Radio Exchange, and the BBC World Service. Its digital home is cfpublic.org.
