KANW 89.1
KANW (89.1 FM) is Albuquerque's public radio station — the oldest FM station in New Mexico, signed on in October 1950, and still owned and operated by Albuquerque Public Schools as the flagship of the New Mexico Public Radio network.
About KANW 89.1
In 1949, Albuquerque Public Schools superintendent John Milne applied to the FCC for a license to build an FM station to serve the school system. KANW first signed on the air in October 1950 — the first FM station in the state of New Mexico — broadcasting classroom instructional programming during school hours from a small studio on the third floor of the old Albuquerque High School, going dark during summer recess.
The station grew beyond the classroom. A 1969 power increase and a move to Sandia Crest with a federally funded high-power transmitter gave KANW maximum legal power and coverage across much of north-central New Mexico. In 1973 it added New Mexico music programming on Friday afternoons — a show that moved to Saturday mornings and became one of the most consistently listened-to programs in New Mexico radio history, a fixture it still airs. KANW also joined NPR as an affiliate, carrying national programs alongside its local lineup.
Today KANW is a non-profit, non-commercial NPR affiliate run by Albuquerque Public Schools, blending NPR news, New Mexico music, and local public affairs. Its signal is simulcast across the state through New Mexico Public Radio satellites including KANR (91.9, Santa Rosa), KGGA (88.1, Gallup), KIDS (88.1, Grants), KEDP (91.1, Las Vegas), and KXNM (88.7, Encino), with news/talk on its HD2 subchannel. Its digital home is kanw.org.
