About KBOI
KBOI (670 AM, simulcast on 93.1 FM), branded "News Talk KBOI," is Boise's flagship news/talk radio station — signed on August 11, 1947, and owned by Cumulus Media, its 50,000-watt signal makes it Idaho's designated primary entry point for the Emergency Alert System.
The station signed on August 11, 1947, as KDSH on 950 kHz, owned by Boise Valley Broadcasters, a subsidiary of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was a CBS Radio Network affiliate for much of its early life and even spawned Boise's second television station, channel 2 KBOI-TV, in 1953. The call letters changed to KBOI in 1955, and the station moved to 670 kHz — with 50,000 watts of power — in 1968.
Under Citadel Broadcasting, the station switched its network affiliation from CBS to ABC in 2005; Citadel's 2007 acquisition of ABC Radio and its own merger with Cumulus Media in 2011 brought KBOI into today's Cumulus Boise cluster, which also includes KIZN, KKGL, KQFC, and KTIK. In 2015 Cumulus moved KBOI and most of its other news/talk stations from ABC News to Westwood One News, and the station now simulcasts its talk format with KBOI-FM 93.1 under the "News Talk KBOI" brand.
Because of its powerful 50,000-watt clear-channel signal, KBOI can be heard across much of the western United States and western Canada at night, which is why it serves as Idaho's designated primary entry point station for the Emergency Alert System. Studios are on Bannock Street in downtown Boise; its digital home is kboi.com.
