About Debtwire
Debtwire is a news, data and analytics service for the leveraged finance and credit markets, serving investors, banks and legal advisors with investigative journalism and proprietary intelligence on companies across the global credit spectrum. Launched in 2003 by The Mergermarket Group, it has become the leading provider of information on distressed debt, high-yield bonds, leveraged loans and private credit, describing itself as the first true end-to-end platform for the leveraged finance market. Today it operates as part of ION Analytics, with coverage of more than 47,000 global issuers and three decades of fixed-income data behind its reporting.
Launch in 2003
Debtwire was launched in 2003 by The Mergermarket Group as a dedicated publisher of news and information on the distressed debt and leveraged finance markets. From the start, its team combined people with backgrounds in sales and trading, credit research and financial journalism, generating what it called unbiased, value-added intelligence on fixed income markets. Alongside proprietary reporting, the service aggregated all relevant market news ahead of each trading day, using an extensive network of journalists in more than 65 locations across the globe, and complemented its intelligence with credit analysis of company balance sheets, timetables, merger and acquisition activity and advisor analysis.
The Financial Times Group years
The business was acquired by the Financial Times Group in August 2006, when Pearson's FT Group bought The Mergermarket Group, making Debtwire part of the same division as the Financial Times newspaper and FT.com. Under FT Group ownership, Debtwire grew alongside sister products Mergermarket and Dealreporter, building a reputation as the essential daily read for professionals in European and global credit. The FT era gave the brand institutional weight and resources, and it was during this period that Debtwire became firmly established as the leading provider of global fixed-income news and analysis, a position it has held for more than two decades.
Acuris and the road to ION
After the Mergermarket Group was sold by Pearson to the private equity firm BC Partners in 2013, the group was renamed Acuris, a financial intelligence business with nearly 1,500 employees in 66 locations worldwide and products spanning fixed income, transactions, equities, compliance and infrastructure. In 2019, the Irish software and data company ION Group agreed to buy Acuris from BC Partners for $1.7 billion, a deal reported by Reuters Breakingviews that brought Mergermarket, Debtwire and Dealreporter into ION's growing portfolio of financial data and software businesses, alongside names such as Dealogic and Fidessa.
Part of ION Analytics
Within ION, Debtwire sits in the ION Analytics division, which describes itself as delivering personalised, targeted data and market intelligence to banks, investors and corporates, merging human insight with machine intelligence. ION Analytics' platform brings together services including Dealogic, Mergermarket and Debtwire, enabling capital markets participants to analyse new markets, source new deals, monitor live transactions and profile market participants. Debtwire is positioned as the first end-to-end service on the platform covering the entire dealmaking lifecycle for leveraged capital markets professionals.
What Debtwire covers
Debtwire covers issuers of high-yield bonds, broadly syndicated loans and private credit, tracking companies from the origination of new debt through refinancing, distress and restructuring. Its coverage spans primary issuance, covenant compliance, amendments, debt refinancing, restructuring negotiations, credit default swap activity, committee activity, advisory mandates, rating actions and litigation. The service follows what it calls the leveraged corporate issuer lifecycle: primary issuance, performing credit, stressed, distressed, restructuring and post-restructuring, giving subscribers a continuous view of each credit's journey.
The service also tracks the birth and evolution of private credit deals in detail, following cases such as the multi-billion-pound IRIS Software refinancing through bids, private credit negotiations and eventual deal announcements. Its lifecycle definitions map every stage from primary issuance and performing credit through stressed and distressed debt to restructuring and post-restructuring, giving subscribers a consistent framework for monitoring more than 47,000 issuers of high-yield bonds, leveraged loans and private credit across global markets.
Investigative journalism at its core
What distinguishes Debtwire from pure data providers is its journalism. The service is known for well-researched investigative reporting, breaking market-moving stories on distressed situations, liability management transactions and restructuring negotiations before they become public. Its newsroom draws on award-winning journalists, former lawyers and research analysts, and its scoops are closely watched by hedge funds, distressed-debt investors, bankers and the legal advisors who work on restructurings. For many in the credit world, the Debtwire morning read is as much a part of the routine as the bond prices themselves.
Data, analytics and the next-generation platform
Alongside its editorial output, Debtwire offers thirty years of fixed-income data and predictive analytics, with in-depth coverage of more than 47,000 global issuers. In 2023, ION Analytics unveiled the next-generation Debtwire platform at the Debtwire Restructuring Forum – Europe in London, presenting it as a platform that amplifies the service's editorial coverage and data with an enhanced user experience. The relaunch reflected the industry's direction: journalism and data increasingly delivered as a single integrated product, with alerts, analytics and news working together for time-pressed professionals.
Who uses Debtwire
Debtwire's subscribers are the professionals who live in the leveraged finance markets: investors in high-yield bonds and leveraged loans, private credit funds, investment bankers, restructuring advisors, lawyers and the corporate issuers themselves. Its intelligence helps them capitalise on market-moving credit events, identify risks early and monitor performance across the entire leveraged issuer lifecycle. The service's global reach, with journalists across the Americas, Europe and Asia-Pacific, makes it a genuinely international product in a market where a distressed credit in one jurisdiction can move portfolios everywhere.
A daily rhythm for the credit markets
Debtwire's value has always been bound up with speed. From its earliest years, the information it sourced was delivered immediately via email alerts and made available in real time on its online platform, and part of the service's original proposition was to aggregate all relevant market news before the market opened each day, so that subscribers began trading with the full picture in front of them. That daily rhythm – proprietary intelligence overnight, alerts as stories break, and a real-time platform for everything in between – remains the core of the product. In a market where a single restructuring announcement can move portfolios by millions, being first and being right are the two currencies that matter, and Debtwire built its reputation on both.
The credit intelligence industry
Debtwire operates in one of the most competitive corners of financial information, where banks, funds and advisors pay premium subscriptions for an edge in the credit markets. Its parent, Acuris, employed nearly 1,500 people across 66 locations worldwide, providing proprietary insights and analytics across fixed income, transactions, equities, compliance and infrastructure. Within ION's wider portfolio, Debtwire sits alongside businesses such as Mergermarket, Dealogic and Fidessa, giving ION a formidable presence in capital markets intelligence. The ION Analytics platform brings these services together under a single proposition: human insight merged with machine intelligence, serving professionals who analyse new markets, source deals, monitor live transactions and profile market participants around the clock.
Events and the restructuring community
Beyond the screen, Debtwire convenes the restructuring community through events such as the Debtwire Restructuring Forum, whose European edition in London is a fixture of the distressed-debt calendar. These gatherings bring together investors, advisors and issuers to debate the state of the credit markets, and they double as showcases for the platform's latest developments. For a service whose value lies in information advantage, the forums extend that advantage into the room, making Debtwire not just a publisher but a meeting point for the global leveraged finance industry.
