About Refinitiv India

Refinitiv India

Overview

Refinitiv India is the Indian operation of Refinitiv, the financial markets data and infrastructure business that is now part of the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG). From its Indian offices — principally a large technology and operations hub in Bengaluru and a commercial presence in Mumbai, the country's financial capital — the business supplies market data, analytics, trading and risk tools, and news-linked information services to banks, brokerages, asset managers, corporates, fintech firms and media organisations. The Refinitiv nameplate, retained on Indian legal entities such as Refinitiv India Shared Services Private Limited, connects the operation to one of the largest financial data businesses in the world.

Globally, Refinitiv has described itself as one of the world's largest providers of financial markets data and infrastructure, serving over 40,000 institutions in more than 190 countries, with data and insights, trading platforms and open technology platforms used across trading, investment, wealth management, regulatory compliance, market data management, enterprise risk and the fight against financial crime. India is both a market for those products and one of the group's most important delivery locations, where Indian teams help maintain the data that clients around the world trade on.

History: From Thomson Reuters Financial and Risk to Refinitiv

Refinitiv was created out of the Financial and Risk business of Thomson Reuters, the unit that carried the Reuters heritage in financial data — terminals, data feeds, trading systems and risk tools — as distinct from the Reuters news agency itself. On 30 January 2018, Thomson Reuters and Blackstone announced a strategic partnership under which Thomson Reuters would sell a 55 per cent interest in the Financial and Risk business while retaining 45 per cent, with the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and an affiliate of GIC investing alongside Blackstone. The transaction valued the business at about 20 billion US dollars.

The new company name, Refinitiv, was announced in July 2018, and the deal closed on 1 October 2018, when the Financial and Risk business formally became Refinitiv. Its first chief executive was David Craig. The business reported turnover of over six billion US dollars. In August 2019, LSEG agreed to acquire Refinitiv in an all-share transaction valuing it at about 27 billion US dollars, and by 2021 Refinitiv was being described in its own announcements as "an LSEG business" — the status it retains in India today, with LSEG job postings in Bengaluru issued under the Refinitiv India Shared Services entity.

Products and Platforms

Refinitiv's flagship desktop has defined its presence in dealing rooms and newsrooms. At the time of the company's creation, its flagship platforms were Eikon — the desktop used by financial professionals for prices, analytics, charts and messaging — and the Elektron Data Platform, its data delivery infrastructure. Eikon has since been succeeded by LSEG Workspace, and LSEG support material in India describes teams dedicated to the Eikon desktop and to helping clients migrate to Workspace, covering usability, customisation, content search and data integrity. Alongside the desktop sits Datastream, the historical time-series database referenced in Indian analyst roles.

Behind the screens is a data operation of considerable scale. Company materials have cited around 40 billion market updates delivered daily, up to seven million updates per second across feeds covering more than 70 million instruments, petabytes of time-stamped price history, historical time series on tens of millions of instruments across asset classes, and in-depth ESG data on thousands of global companies. Its data platform APIs give developers access to content sets including tick history, corporate filings drawn from more than 40 million disclosure documents, and funds data built around the Lipper business, including the Lipper Leaders rating system and global fund classifications. For Indian fintechs and advisers, products such as Knowledge Direct — a flexible API delivering real-time, multi-asset financial data — are the practical entry point to this content.

How Indian Clients and Newsrooms Use Refinitiv

In India, Refinitiv's tools are used wherever decisions depend on fast, verified market information. Trading desks and treasuries use its prices and analytics; compliance teams rely on its reference and entity data to meet regulatory obligations; wealth managers and advisers use its desktop products to research securities and communicate with clients; and financial journalists use the same market data, company filings and economic indicators that underpin market coverage — the prices, results and corporate actions that fill business pages and news bulletins.

A documented example of this use is the partnership announced from Mumbai in March 2021 between Refinitiv and MarketsMojo, an Indian algorithm-based stock research platform. Under the partnership, MarketsMojo adopted Refinitiv products including Knowledge Direct to broaden its stock market advisory services, gaining real-time market insight and coverage of more than eight million instruments for the equity market. The announcement framed India as one of the fastest-growing fintech hubs in the world, with over 2,000 fintech start-ups — precisely the customer segment that buys data APIs rather than building data collection operations of its own.

India Footprint: Bengaluru, Mumbai and New Delhi

Although the directory entry for Refinitiv India is anchored in Mumbai — the city from which its Indian commercial announcements are issued and where India's exchanges, regulators and largest financial institutions are based — the group's largest Indian presence is in Bengaluru. Legal-entity records for Refinitiv India Shared Services Private Limited place it at Divyasree Technopolis in Bengaluru, and LSEG recruitment material locates content and support teams there, including at RMZ Infinity. These teams perform global work: content analysts maintain equities pricing and reference data, and customer support operations provide a 24/7 entry point for product, content and technical support to clients worldwide, reflecting the shift work required to cover Asian, European and American markets.

The scale of the Bengaluru operation was reported in March 2022, when LSEG said it had added 1,500 staff at its Bengaluru hub in the previous year, taking headcount there to about 5,850, with a further roughly 350 people employed collectively in Mumbai and New Delhi. At that time more than half of LSEG's roughly 25,000 global employees were based across Asia-Pacific, and the group operated in some 70 countries. Indian hiring has continued across data operations, customer support and technology roles, with LSEG India publicising its Great Place to Work certification for 2025–26.

Ownership and Corporate Structure

Refinitiv India operates within LSEG's ownership structure: the Refinitiv business, majority-owned by Blackstone-led funds between October 2018 and its acquisition by LSEG, is now wholly part of the London Stock Exchange Group, the UK-listed financial markets infrastructure and data provider. In India, employment and operations run through Indian subsidiaries, of which Refinitiv India Shared Services Private Limited is the principal hiring entity visible in current recruitment. The "Refinitiv" brand continues to be used for the data and analytics product family and for these Indian entities even as the parent increasingly presents its desktop and data offerings under the LSEG name, as with LSEG Workspace.

Role in India's Financial News Ecosystem

Refinitiv India's significance for Indian journalism is infrastructural. Business news in India — market reports, results coverage, IPO and bond reporting, currency and commodity stories — is produced against data feeds and terminals of exactly the kind Refinitiv supplies, and the accuracy of exchange prices, corporate filings and reference data maintained by teams such as its Bengaluru content analysts feeds directly into what audiences read and watch. The company's Indian partnerships with fintech platforms extend that influence to retail investors, whose apps and advisory tools increasingly display Refinitiv-sourced prices and analytics. In a directory of news and media services, Refinitiv India therefore sits on the data-supply side of the news business: it does not publish journalism itself, but it provides much of the verified financial information on which Indian financial journalism depends.

Digital Presence and Access

Refinitiv's services are sold to institutions by subscription and are accessed through its desktop (LSEG Workspace), web products, APIs and data feeds rather than through free public channels. The group's developer portal documents the Refinitiv Data Platform APIs for firms integrating its content into their own applications, and its Indian partnerships show a route by which smaller firms can consume its data through API products such as Knowledge Direct. Prospective Indian clients approach the business through LSEG's commercial teams, with Mumbai serving as the natural point of contact for financial institutions, while the refinitiv.com website now routes users into the LSEG digital estate.

Notable Facts and Developments

Several facts capture Refinitiv's unusual corporate journey. The business carries a heritage its own materials trace back some 168 years to the origins of Reuters as a financial information pioneer — an era of carrier pigeons, telegraph cables and early market price services that the company's media pack celebrates as the first fintech story. It was separated from Thomson Reuters in a transaction that returned approximately 17 billion US dollars in gross proceeds to Thomson Reuters, then acquired by LSEG barely a year later at a higher valuation, making it the data engine at the heart of the modern LSEG. In India, its trajectory has been one of steady expansion of the Bengaluru hub into one of the group's largest global centres, alongside partnerships that embed its data in Indian fintech products.

How to Use This Directory Entry

For media organisations, Refinitiv India is best understood as a supplier to approach for market data, terminals, filings and analytics rather than as a newsroom contact. Financial publishers and broadcasters evaluating data vendors can use this entry as a starting point for identifying the correct LSEG commercial route, while researchers should note the distinction between the Refinitiv data business covered here and Reuters, the separate news agency whose journalism is produced by Thomson Reuters — a distinction created by the 2018 transaction and preserved within the current group structure.
