About 451 Research

451 Research

451 Research is a technology research and advisory firm based in New York, founded in 2000, that analyses emerging enterprise technologies for technology vendors, service providers, investors and early-adopting enterprises. Since December 2019 it has been part of S&P Global Market Intelligence, the data and analytics division of S&P Global. Listed in this directory with New York, New York, as its location and 451research.com as its official website, the firm covers cloud computing, data centres, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and machine learning, the Internet of Things and DevOps, among other segments.

The firm's name is a literary reference, chosen by its founders, a team of British technology journalists, as a nod to the temperature associated with Ray Bradbury's novel about the power of knowledge and the dangers of censorship. From journalist beginnings it grew into one of the leading global technology analyst firms, ranked in commentary about the company behind only the largest analyst houses in client numbers, revenue and market influence, and it has been credited with publishing more than 3,000 reports and data sets annually.

Founding and the 451 Group

451 Research began as the research division of The 451 Group, founded in April 2000 with offices in London, New York and San Francisco. The founding team of four all came from ComputerWire, a British information technology publishing business, and initial funding came from Durlacher, a London-based listed brokerage firm. After Durlacher's withdrawal and a management buyout, the group developed under Chief Executive and Chairman Martin McCarthy into a portfolio of research and data businesses.

The group expanded by acquisition. In 2009 it acquired the Uptime Institute, the data centre industry's standards and certification organisation, which remained its sister business. It bought consumer spending research firm ChangeWave Research in 2011, events company Tech Touchstone in 2013, mobile communications research firm Yankee Group in 2013 and the IT professional community Wisegate in 2017. Each addition widened the data and audience on which the research division could draw.

Acquisition by S&P Global

On 6 December 2019, S&P Global acquired 451 Research from The 451 Group, in a transaction signed and closed on the same day, with terms not disclosed. The research business, not including the Uptime Institute, which remained with the 451 Group, became part of S&P Global Market Intelligence. S&P stated that 451 Research's expertise in disruptive technologies would expand its sector-relevant and differentiated data offerings and strengthen its ability to help customers understand digital transformation.

The acquisition placed an analyst firm known for qualitative judgement about emerging technology inside a financial data giant whose products serve investment and corporate decision-making, a combination both companies presented as additive: S&P brought distribution and data scale, and 451 Research brought technology market insight and analyst relationships. Several of the firm's co-founders remained in key research roles after the sale, including the head of research who had arrived through the Yankee Group acquisition.

Research Focus and Coverage

451 Research concentrates on innovation, disruption and value creation in enterprise technology markets, deliberately weighting its coverage toward high-growth emerging segments rather than mature categories. Its analysts cover cloud computing, data centre technologies, artificial intelligence and machine learning, information security, the Internet of Things, DevOps and related areas of digital infrastructure and enterprise software.

A hallmark of the firm is its tracking of enterprise technology customer sentiment, using survey research into what technology buyers are actually planning and spending. Its Voice of the Enterprise survey program polls technology decision-makers on adoption, budgets and vendors, giving its analysis a demand-side evidence base that complements its study of suppliers. The combination of analyst judgement, market data and buyer surveys is the methodological identity the firm carried into S&P Global.

Products and Output

Before its acquisition, 451 Research was described as publishing more than 3,000 reports and data sets annually, spanning market insight reports, company analysis, market sizing and forecasting, surveys and custom advisory work. Its analysts assess vendors, start-ups and market categories, and its research is delivered to subscribers through S&P Global Market Intelligence's platforms alongside that division's financial and sector data.

The firm's data centre coverage illustrates the depth of its sector work. Its forecasts and market analysis in that segment are combined by S&P Global with power market and infrastructure data, and S&P's announced 2026 acquisition of data centre intelligence provider datacenterHawk was explicitly framed around combining that firm's asset-level data with 451 Research forecasts.

Clients and Subscriber Base

451 Research serves leading technology vendors and service providers, innovative start-ups, technology investment bankers, venture capitalists, and technology market consulting and professional service firms, as well as early-adopter enterprise companies. Each group uses the research differently: vendors to position products and understand competitors, investors to judge markets and companies, bankers to support technology transactions, and enterprises to validate purchasing and architecture decisions in fast-moving categories.

Within S&P Global Market Intelligence, that audience overlaps with the financial and corporate users of the parent platform, extending the firm's reach to clients who encounter its technology analysis as part of a broader data subscription.

Geographic Scope

The firm was international from its founding, with London, New York and San Francisco offices at its creation and a founding team drawn from British technology publishing. It is listed in this directory with New York as its location, reflecting its position as a New York City-based firm within S&P Global, itself headquartered in New York. Its research coverage is global in subject, since the enterprise technology markets, vendors and data centre developments it tracks span North America, Europe and Asia.

Digital Presence and Media Role

The firm's digital presence is centred on 451research.com and on the S&P Global Market Intelligence platform through which subscribers access its reports. Its analysts appear in technology and business media as expert sources on cloud adoption, data centre growth, cybersecurity markets and artificial intelligence, and its market forecasts are quoted in news coverage of those sectors. S&P Global's distribution gives its findings a wider financial-media audience than it reached as an independent firm.

Its survey findings in particular travel as news: reports of enterprise spending intentions or adoption rates for a new technology are regularly released and reported as indicators of where technology budgets are moving.

Relationship with the Uptime Institute

451 Research's history is intertwined with the Uptime Institute, the data centre tier standards and certification organisation that The 451 Group acquired in 2009. The two businesses were complementary: the Institute set and certified standards for data centre design and operations, while the research arm analysed the data centre market commercially. When S&P Global bought 451 Research in 2019, the Uptime Institute remained with The 451 Group, whose chief executive described himself as becoming a client of the research firm within its new home. The separation underlines what S&P was purchasing: not the standards body, but the analyst coverage, surveys and market data of the research division itself.

Significance

451 Research's significance comes from its position at the emerging edge of enterprise technology analysis. Founded by journalists at the height of the dot-com era, it specialised in explaining technologies before they became mainstream, and it built proprietary evidence about buyer behaviour to test vendor claims against. Its acquisition by S&P Global marked the convergence of technology analysis with financial data, recognising that understanding cloud, data centres and artificial intelligence had become essential not only to technology professionals but to investors and companies across the economy. Within that combined platform, the 451 name continues to denote specialist judgement about the technologies reshaping business.
