Ideastream Public Media is the main public broadcaster of Northeast Ohio — a nonprofit operating NPR news radio, classical and jazz stations, and the Cleveland PBS station from Playhouse Square in downtown Cleveland.
About Ideastream Public Media
Ideastream was formed in July 2001 through the merger of WVIZ (Cleveland's PBS station) and WCPN (then the region's NPR member station), uniting the Educational Television Association of Metropolitan Cleveland and Cleveland Public Radio. The combined organization is headquartered at the Idea Center in Playhouse Square, downtown Cleveland, and is led by president and CEO Kevin E. Martin.
Today Ideastream operates WKSU (89.7 FM) — the region's flagship NPR news station, run under agreement with owner Kent State University since 2021 — alongside classical outlet WCLV (90.3 FM), jazz outlet WCSB (89.3 FM, owned by Cleveland State University), and PBS member station WVIZ (channel 25). It also runs the Statehouse News Bureau, a shared public-media bureau covering Ohio state government. Its stations jointly rebranded as Ideastream Public Media in June 2021.
As Northeast Ohio's largest independent, publicly supported media organization, Ideastream says it serves some 3.6 million people across 22 counties with news, arts, classical and jazz music, and educational programming on radio, television, and digital platforms. A merger with PBS Western Reserve was announced in 2026, which would bring additional PBS stations under the Ideastream name.
