About Carbon Pulse

Carbon Pulse is a London-based subscription news service covering global carbon markets, emissions trading and climate policy. Launched on 4 March 2015 by three former Reuters and Point Carbon journalists — Ben Garside, Stian Reklev and Mike Szabo — it has become the go-to source of breaking news and intelligence for compliance and voluntary carbon markets, publishing more than 33,000 articles for thousands of subscribers and reaching a global audience of tens of thousands of readers daily. An independent private venture headquartered in London, it marked its tenth anniversary in 2025 by launching a suite of three specialist subscription products. It publishes from carbon-pulse.com.

Founding in 2015

Carbon Pulse was launched in 2015 by a group of former Reuters and Point Carbon journalists with almost 30 years of experience between them in covering carbon markets and climate policy. Ben Garside, Stian Reklev and Mike Szabo each contributed to the title from its earliest days, building on careers reporting carbon markets and climate policies for Point Carbon and Reuters — Reklev alone reported the beat from 2001 to 2015 and had launched and edited specialist publications on emissions markets in Europe and Australia and New Zealand.

The launch was announced to the media industry in March 2015, with the founders reaching the market at news@carbon-pulse.com and on social media. The timing was deliberate: with the Paris Agreement negotiations approaching and carbon markets evolving rapidly, the founders saw an opening for an independent, journalist-led service dedicated entirely to carbon pricing and climate policy.

The editorial model

Carbon Pulse is an online, subscription-based B2B service dedicated to providing in-depth news and intelligence about carbon pricing initiatives and climate change policies around the world, with a strong focus on emissions trading markets and other methods of using taxes and market-based mechanisms to cut greenhouse gas output. Its team has a strong track record of breaking stories that move markets and inform policy development worldwide.

The journalism draws on a vast number of cultivated primary and secondary sources, cross-referenced with media coverage worldwide to give context and generate accurate, intelligent content. There is no advertising on the website: the business is funded by subscriptions, aligning its incentives with its readers rather than advertisers — a model its audience of market professionals values.

Carbon Pulse in numbers

The scale of the operation is substantial: the company reports an average of 30 articles published daily, 472,000 average monthly page views in 2024 and 66,000 average monthly unique users in 2024. Since its 2015 launch it has published more than 33,000 articles, making it what it describes as the most revered and trusted news source for global carbon markets.

Its news and analysis caters to a global audience of tens of thousands of readers daily, including executives, investors, traders, brokers, project developers, analysts, consultants, lawyers, government officials, NGOs and other professionals. Its biggest markets in 2024 were the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, Singapore, Canada, Ireland, the Netherlands, India, France, Japan and Switzerland — a footprint spanning every major carbon market in the world.

The 35-strong team

Carbon Pulse's 35-strong team regularly breaks the key stories that move markets and policies. The staff includes co-founder and director Stian Reklev, based in Oslo; environmental markets correspondents such as Cameron Murdoch in London, previously an economist in the UK civil service working on Brexit planning, energy costs, green finance and climate modelling; Latin America editor and senior Middle East and North Africa correspondent Alejandra Padin-Dujon in Madrid, previously a climate policy adviser at CAFOD and an economist at Vivid Economics; and correspondents such as Nikita Pandey in Goa, India, previously a commodities analyst with The Economist Group.

The team's backgrounds — spanning wire-service journalism, economics, policymaking and consultancy — reflect the hybrid nature of carbon market reporting, which demands fluency in both financial markets and climate policy.

The product suite: Premium, Net Zero and Nature

To celebrate ten years of Carbon Pulse, the company announced in March 2025 the segmentation of its news and intelligence into three specialised subscription products, launched in July 2025. Carbon Pulse Premium, the new name for the existing paid subscription, remains the flagship product, covering compliance carbon markets such as the EU ETS, the California carbon market and the China ETS; other greenhouse gas pricing including taxes, carbon border adjustment mechanisms and carbon tariffs; the voluntary carbon market; international climate negotiations and Article 6 of the Paris Agreement; nature-based carbon solutions; and climate-related government and corporate policy.

Net Zero Pulse is a separate subscription product focused on the corporate journey to net zero, covering international climate negotiations, aviation and CORSIA, shipping, carbon dioxide removals, carbon capture utilisation and storage, renewables, electrification, clean fuels, industrial decarbonisation and green investment, reporting and disclosure. Nature & Biodiversity Pulse covers the emerging market for nature and biodiversity credits. Each product is available for a two-week free trial.

Free services: CP Daily and the news ticker

Alongside the paid products, Carbon Pulse offers free services that extend its reach. CP Daily is a free daily newsletter featuring more than 30 carbon and climate-related stories, covering everything except biodiversity; a twice-weekly Nature & Biodiversity newsletter serves that market. The free-access Daily News Ticker provides a running list of all the service's news, updated in real time throughout the day.

The company also provides daily and weekly market reports explaining what is moving prices and why, data analysis and portals, special events coverage such as the COP climate negotiations, subscriber email alerts, job listings, and contributed and sponsored content from strategic partners, subscribers and other leading industry voices.

Carbon Forward

Carbon Pulse is a co-founder and producer of Carbon Forward, the premier global carbon markets conference series. Since its inaugural 2016 event, Carbon Forward Expo London has become Europe's premier environmental markets conference, spawning multiple global offshoots.

The conference business extends the journalism franchise into convening: the same market professionals who read Carbon Pulse's breaking news meet at Carbon Forward to debate policy, trade and the future of carbon pricing. The company also seeks partners to co-host smaller creative events connecting carbon market professionals, and offers data partnership programmes highlighting partner data to its readers.

Carbon Pulse today

Today Carbon Pulse operates from London as an independent private venture, offering three subscription products focused on compliance, voluntary, and nature and biodiversity markets, alongside its free newsletters and real-time ticker. Its 35-strong team publishes around 30 articles a day for thousands of loyal subscribers, and its biggest markets span North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific and beyond.

From a 2015 start-up founded by three journalists with three decades of carbon-market reporting between them, Carbon Pulse has grown into the news source its market cannot do without: the first read of the day for the traders, policymakers, investors and project developers putting a price on carbon around the world.

Breaking news that moves markets

Carbon Pulse's reputation rests on what its founders call a strong track record of breaking stories that move markets and inform policy development worldwide. The three founders brought almost 30 years of combined experience covering carbon markets and climate policy from Reuters and Point Carbon, and the service they built applies wire-service standards of speed and accuracy to the specialist carbon beat.

The team taps a vast number of cultivated primary and secondary sources, cross-referencing them with media coverage worldwide to give context and generate accurate, intelligent content — journalism the founders describe as second-to-none. Readers can reach the newsroom at news@carbon-pulse.com and follow its reporting on social media, where the title's scoops on emissions trading policy, carbon price moves and climate negotiations routinely set the agenda for the market's daily conversation.
