About Heart
Heart is the United Kingdom's biggest commercial radio brand, a network of adult contemporary stations owned by Global that reaches more than 12 million listeners a week. Broadcasting a mix of local and networked programming in a hot adult contemporary format, Heart has grown from a single Midlands station launched in 1994 into a national network whose breakfast show with Jamie Theakston and Amanda Holden is one of the most-listened-to programmes in British radio. Its London flagship, Heart London on 106.2 FM, anchors a network that spans England, Scotland and Wales.
History and Launch
The Heart network traces its origins to 6 September 1994, when the first Heart station launched in the West Midlands. The London station followed a year later: in 1994, Chrysalis Radio was awarded a London-wide licence to broadcast "soft AC" music, winning the licence under the working name Crystal FM. After test transmissions in August 1995 — which included live broadcasts of WPLJ from New York City — Heart 106.2 launched on 5 September 1995.
In 1996 the programming format shifted from "soft AC" to a more neutral hot adult contemporary playlist. The network then expanded rapidly: in 2009, 29 local radio stations owned by Global were rebranded as part of a rollout of the Heart network, absorbing stations with long independent histories such as Essex FM, Fox FM, Invicta, Ocean FM and Southern FM. Further consolidation followed, with the network reduced from 33 to 16 stations in 2010, and in 2014 the Real Radio stations in Scotland, Wales and the North East — acquired through Global's purchase of GMG Radio — were rebranded as Heart.
Ownership
Heart is owned by Global, the UK's largest commercial radio company, which acquired the original Heart stations along with LBC, Galaxy and The Arrow from Chrysalis Radio for £170 million in June 2007. Ten of the network's stations are owned and operated directly by Global, while three operate under separate franchise agreements. Global is headquartered at Leicester Square in London, from where the network's national programming is produced. The network is regulated by Ofcom.
Format and Programming
Heart's format is hot adult contemporary — a blend of current hits and well-known songs from recent decades aimed primarily at 25 to 44-year-old listeners. The network's programming is a mix of national shows produced in London and regional drivetime and news output; only the stations in Scotland and Wales still carry their own dedicated shows beyond the networked schedule. The strapline "This is Heart" and the brand's feel-good, music-led identity have made it one of the most recognisable radio brands in the UK.
Local programming was progressively reduced over the years: by 2010 it stood at seven hours on weekdays and four at weekends, and by 2019 it had been cut to the Ofcom minimum of three hours per weekday, with no local content at weekends. National shows, including the breakfast show broadcast live from Leicester Square, now dominate the schedule.
Flagship Shows and Presenters
Heart Breakfast, hosted by Jamie Theakston and Amanda Holden and broadcast live from Leicester Square since June 2019, is the network's flagship programme, with 4.1 million listeners — on par with BBC Radio 1's breakfast show. Theakston is one of British radio's most experienced breakfast presenters, while Holden, known nationally from Britain's Got Talent, brought a new audience to the show. The network's daytime and drivetime presenters play the biggest hits alongside celebrity interviews, listener stories and the station's trademark upbeat tone.
Broadcast Area and Frequencies
Heart broadcasts nationally across the United Kingdom. The London station, Heart London, is heard on 106.2 MHz FM across London and neighbouring counties, on DAB via the CE Digital London multiplex, and on digital television via Sky channel 0109, Freeview channel 728, Freesat channel 733 and Virgin Media channel 918. The national version of the network is widely available on Global Player, Global's streaming app, as well as on DAB via the Digital One multiplex, Freeview, Sky, Freesat and Virgin Media. Regional stations across England, Scotland and Wales carry the network on their own FM and DAB frequencies.
Audience and Ratings
According to RAJAR figures for the fourth quarter of 2025, the entire Heart network has been named the UK's biggest radio brand, with 12.71 million weekly listeners — narrowly ahead of rival BBC Radio 2 on 12.7 million. Heart Breakfast's 4.1 million listeners make it one of the most popular breakfast shows in the country. The network's audience has grown steadily through the 2010s and 2020s as Global consolidated its stations and invested in star presenters and national marketing.
Digital and Streaming
Heart is available through Global Player, Global's app and website, which offers live streaming of all Heart stations, catch-up listening and podcasts. The network has embraced smart speakers, with listeners able to request Heart by voice, and maintains a large social media following where programme highlights, celebrity interviews and competitions are shared. Heart's digital spin-off stations, including Heart 70s, Heart 80s, Heart 90s, Heart 00s, Heart Dance and Heart Xmas, extend the brand across decades and genres on DAB and Global Player.
Brand Identity and Marketing
Heart's identity is built around warmth, positivity and familiarity. The "This is Heart" station identification, the bright red heart logo and the feel-good music promise have been reinforced by years of high-profile television and outdoor advertising, making the brand instantly recognisable even to non-listeners. The network's marketing has leaned heavily on its star presenters, with Jamie Theakston and Amanda Holden fronting national campaigns for the breakfast show. This brand consistency across regions — the same jingles, the same imaging, the same playlist philosophy from Cornwall to Scotland — was a deliberate strategy by Global to create a single national commercial brand with the scale to compete with the BBC's national networks for both audiences and advertisers.
Cultural Impact
Heart's rise to become the UK's biggest commercial radio brand marks a shift in British listening habits towards national networked brands. Its feel-good positioning, star presenters and heavy marketing — including high-profile television advertising — have made "This is Heart" a familiar phrase across the country. The network's consolidation of dozens of once-independent local stations into a national brand also made it a symbol of the wider transformation of UK commercial radio in the 2000s and 2010s, a change that brought national scale at the cost of local programming.
Sister Stations
Heart sits within Global's portfolio alongside some of the biggest names in UK commercial radio. Its sister stations include Capital, the hit-music network; Smooth, the easy-listening network; Classic FM, the UK's national classical music station; LBC, the national talk station; LBC News; Radio X, the alternative rock station; and Gold, the classic hits station. In London, Heart London's sister stations include Capital London, LBC, Smooth London, Radio X and Gold.
Recent Developments
Heart has continued to grow its audience through the 2020s, overtaking BBC Radio 2 as the UK's biggest radio brand by weekly reach in late 2025. Global has expanded the Heart brand with decade-based spin-off stations and continued investment in Global Player as the digital home of its networks. The network's national breakfast show remains the centrepiece of its schedule, and Heart's combination of star presenters, feel-good music and national scale has secured its position at the top of UK commercial radio.
