About HT Syndication

HT Syndication is the content syndication arm of HT Media Ltd., one of India's largest media companies. Headquartered in Hindustan Times House in New Delhi, it operates as a custom content creation, acquisition and redistribution business, supplying news, features, photographs and archival material to publishers, broadcasters and digital platforms. The company describes itself as the largest content aggregator in South Asia, with redistribution rights not only to the publications of the HT group but also to several newspapers and magazines from India and neighbouring countries including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka. Its official website is htsyndication.com.

Overview

HT Syndication — which operates under the name HTDS Content Services — is the unit of HT Media responsible for selling the group's content to third parties and for creating custom content for clients. Its business has three main strands: syndicating the editorial output of HT Media's own publications, redistributing the content of partner publications from India and South Asia, and producing original custom content in multiple formats and languages for corporate and media clients.

The company presents its services as a full spectrum of editorial offerings: news and features for print and digital publication, photographs and archival images, and bespoke content produced by its in-house team of writers and editors. Its pitch to clients centres on the efficiencies of cost and scale — access to a vast, ready-made library of content, delivered quickly and subjected to rigorous quality control.

HT Media: the parent company

HT Media Ltd. traces its origins to 1924, when its flagship newspaper, the Hindustan Times, was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi. Over the following century it grew into one of India's largest media groups, with a portfolio that has included English print publications, a radio business and the job portal Shine.com, alongside its Hindi publications and digital properties.

In December 2016 the group restructured its content businesses, carving out the 'multimedia content' operations of HT Media and its subsidiary Hindustan Media Ventures Ltd. into a new company, HT Digital Streams Ltd. That subsidiary — jointly owned by HT Media and HMVL — was tasked with creating platform-agnostic content, operating the hindustantimes.com, livemint.com and livehindustan.com portals, and handling content aggregation across the group's publications. The syndication business sits within this broader content ecosystem, monetising the group's editorial output beyond its own publications.

The syndication business

Content syndication is the business of licensing published material to other publishers. HT Syndication supplies the text, photographs and features produced by HT Media's newspapers and magazines to clients who need ready-to-publish editorial content — other newspapers, magazines, websites, broadcasters and corporate publishers. This allows smaller publications to carry national and international coverage they could not afford to produce themselves, while giving HT Media an additional revenue stream from content it has already created.

The company also acts as a redistributor for other publishers. It holds redistribution rights to several publications from India and from neighbouring countries — Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka — which means clients can license content from across South Asia through a single window. On this basis the company describes itself as the largest content aggregator in South Asia.

Content portfolio and redistribution rights

The portfolio covers the editorial output of the HT group's publications: national and international news, business and markets coverage, sports, features, opinion and lifestyle content. Beyond the group's own titles, the redistribution agreements extend the catalogue to partner publications from across the region, giving clients access to perspectives and reporting from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka as well as India.

This cross-border dimension is unusual in the syndication business and reflects the company's South Asia-wide positioning. For publishers in any one of these countries, it offers a single source for licensed content from across the subcontinent — a proposition aimed at media houses that want regional breadth without negotiating separate deals with each publisher.

Operations and scale

HT Syndication describes itself as equipped with a state-of-the-art content management system and claims to deliver more than one lakh — over one hundred thousand — content pieces to its clients every week. Its content team numbers around one hundred writers who work around the clock, seven days a week, to make the latest material available to customers with minimal delay.

Every article is subjected to rigorous quality-control processes before final delivery, designed to ensure that the content meets global benchmarks. The company's materials emphasise that its services are customised to deliver cost and scale efficiencies, value-added content, and precise, concise information targeted directly at clients' needs — positioning the unit as a partner to its clients rather than merely a vendor.

Custom content services

Alongside syndication, the company produces custom content for clients. Its team of experienced writers and editors creates original material in a variety of formats and in several languages, tailored to the client's requirements. This can include branded editorial content, corporate publications, special supplements and digital content — work that draws on the same editorial capabilities that produce the group's newspapers, but directed at the client's own objectives.

The custom-content offering reflects a wider trend in the media industry, where publishers have sought to monetise their editorial expertise directly for corporate clients. For HT Syndication, it is presented as part of a full spectrum of content services covering all aspects of editorial excellence.

Archive and image library

The company maintains what it describes as a huge reservoir of archive images and rich content that clients can acquire for publishing on all platforms. Given the HT group's century-long publishing history, the archive spans decades of Indian news, politics, sport, culture and public life — a resource of considerable value to publishers, documentary makers, researchers and corporate clients.

The archive business complements the current-content syndication: while the wire-style services supply today's news and features, the archive supplies the visual and textual record of the past. Together they give clients access to both the flow of current editorial output and the depth of a historical library.

The Washington Post partnership

One of the most prominent content partnerships in HT Media's history was its exclusive tie-up with The Washington Post. Under the agreement, announced by Hindustan Times editor-in-chief Sanjoy Narayan and Washington Post managing editor Raju Narisetti, the Hindustan Times gained access to the entire content of The Washington Post and Newsweek from 1 January 2010.

The deal allowed HT to pick as many news reports, columns and analyses as it wanted from the American newspaper's output — including material from its bureaus in Beijing, Islamabad, Kabul, Baghdad, Johannesburg, London, Moscow, Nairobi, Tehran, Tokyo, Mexico City, Paris, Jerusalem and New Delhi. The arrangement also covered Hindustan, the group's Hindi daily. On average, HT planned to carry reportage worth a quarter to half a page per day on weekdays, with more extensive coverage on weekends, concentrated in the world and editorial sections. Book reviews and columns were also part of the package, including work by figures such as Fareed Zakaria, then editor of Newsweek International, business columnist Robert Samuelson and columnist David Ignatius. Coverage lifted from the Post carried a specially designed logo identifying it as part of the tie-up.

Headquarters

HT Syndication is headquartered in New Delhi, housed in the landmark Hindustan Times House — the historic home of the group's flagship newspaper in the heart of the capital. Company materials describe the location as the commercial hub of the capital and the working environment as vibrant, with modern infrastructure, workstations equipped with the latest hardware and software, and facilities designed for a round-the-clock content operation.

The New Delhi base places the syndication business at the centre of India's media and policy establishment, close to the group's editorial leadership and to the government and corporate clients that form a significant part of the syndication market.

Market position

HT Syndication's claim to be the largest content aggregator in South Asia rests on the combination of its own group's output, its redistribution rights across the region, and the scale of its delivery operation — over a lakh of content pieces a week, a hundred-strong editorial team, and an archive built over a century of publishing. In a media market where publishers face relentless pressure on costs, the proposition of licensing ready-made, quality-controlled content — from news and features to photographs and custom editorial — has given the unit a durable role in the industry's supply chain.

As part of one of India's oldest and largest media groups, the syndication business also benefits from the credibility of the Hindustan Times brand, inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi in 1924 and still among the country's most recognised newspaper names. That heritage, combined with a modern content-management and distribution operation, is the foundation on which HT Syndication has built its position in the South Asian content market.
