About IRIS Business Services

IRIS Business Services

Overview

IRIS Business Services — now renamed IRIS RegTech Solutions Limited — is a regulatory technology, or regtech, company headquartered at Vashi in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, that builds software for structured regulatory reporting. Its work sits behind the scenes of the financial information system: central banks, securities regulators, stock exchanges, business registries and thousands of companies use its products to create, collect, validate and consume financial and non-financial data in standardised, machine-readable formats, principally XBRL and SDMX. For a news-media directory, IRIS matters because so much financial journalism depends on company filings and regulatory disclosures — and IRIS builds part of the plumbing that makes those filings digital, comparable and analysable.

The company describes itself as a global provider of software products and solutions for compliance, data and analytics across the information supply chain. It has moved over time from a service-oriented model toward a product suite, delivering software through cloud-based and on-premise deployments. It is listed on Indian stock exchanges and describes itself as a listed SaaS player in India's regtech sector, with subsidiaries and operations extending well beyond India.

History and Founding

The company was incorporated in Mumbai on 3 October 2000 as IRIS Business.com (India) Private Limited. Its name changed to IRIS Business Services (India) Private Limited in October 2003, and again to IRIS Business Services Private Limited in July 2009. It became a public limited company in 2010, taking the name IRIS Business Services Limited with effect from 29 June 2010. In October 2017 it came out with a public issue of just over five million equity shares, raising about ₹16 crore. Effective 28 November 2025, the company's name changed again, to IRIS RegTech Solutions Limited, a change that states in its name what the business had become.

IRIS was co-founded by Swaminathan Subramaniam, Balachandran Krishnan and Deepta Rangarajan, with a shared aim of addressing the data challenges faced by regulators and investors. Published milestones from its early years trace a rapid move into structured reporting work for exchanges and regulators: contracts in the mid-2000s to convert historical filings of US companies into XBRL, systems built on its iFile platform for Indian stock exchanges, adoption of iFile by the Reserve Bank of India for capital adequacy returns in 2008, and XBRL work connected to the US securities regulator's mandate and to exchanges and regulators in other markets including South Africa, the United Arab Emirates and Macedonia.

Services and Products

IRIS organises its business into segments described as SupTech, RegTech, TaxTech and DataTech. Its regulator-facing flagship is IRIS iFile, a data collection platform used by financial regulators for regulatory compliance; company and industry descriptions put iFile in use by more than thirty financial regulators in over twenty countries. A related product, IRIS iDEAL, is a regulatory reporting solution for banks, credit institutions and investment firms. These are supervisory technology tools: they let a regulator specify what data it needs, in what taxonomy, and receive it validated and structured rather than as free-form documents.

For enterprises, the flagship is IRIS CARBON, a SaaS platform for disclosure management — creating comprehensive financial and non-financial reports in XBRL and iXBRL formats for filing with regulators. Its Office 365-based disclosure management version, launched in the early 2020s, emphasised collaborative authoring, documents kept in sync across formats, version management and audit trails, online review and commenting, generation of multiple outputs including iXBRL, access control for multi-user work and integration with data sources such as ERP systems. The company has since added AI-enabled features, including an automated XBRL report creation product, IRIS Instant, rolled out in the Malaysian market. In India, IRIS also built a tax technology line — IRIS GST software for goods and services tax filing, with ERP connectors, reconciliation and vendor management — and acted as an authorised GST Suvidha Provider and a private invoice registration portal; in 2025 it announced the divestment of its APAC tax technology business, stating it would focus on growing its SupTech and RegTech lines.

How Regulators, Companies and Newsrooms Use It

A central bank or securities regulator uses IRIS at the collection end: returns from banks, listed companies or intermediaries arrive in a standard taxonomy, can be validated automatically and can be aggregated for supervision. IRIS's own case writing describes central bank projects including a data portal built in 2019 that standardised data collection across departments for a Middle East central bank, work for the Reserve Bank of India dating to the 2000s, and, from 2023, helping Bhutan's Royal Monetary Authority move from paper-based supervision toward a digital supervisory platform with risk analytics. In 2025 the company reported, in partnership with Accenture, an award from the Qatar Central Bank to build a digital reporting platform.

A listed company's finance team uses IRIS from the other direction, inside products such as CARBON, to assemble an annual report or results filing once, tag it in XBRL or iXBRL and file it in the formats different regulators require — securities, sustainability and other mandates among them. One widely cited adoption example from the company is Gap Inc. using IRIS CARBON for its 2021 sustainability report. Journalists and analysts are downstream beneficiaries rather than direct customers: the structured filings that IRIS systems help create and collect are the raw material of earnings coverage, regulatory reporting and data journalism about banks and listed companies.

Headquarters and Footprint

IRIS is headquartered in Navi Mumbai, in the Vashi area, with its registered base in Maharashtra. Its market, however, is global. The company states that it supports more than thirty regulators and more than six thousand enterprises across more than fifty countries, and describes subsidiaries in the United States, Singapore, Malaysia and Italy and an affiliate in the United Arab Emirates. Product descriptions for IRIS CARBON cite enterprise use across Europe, the United Kingdom, Africa, India and the Americas. It is an active member of XBRL jurisdictions including XBRL International, India, Europe, South Africa and the United States.

Ownership and Leadership

IRIS is a publicly listed company, traded on the BSE and NSE, so its ownership is dispersed among public shareholders alongside its promoters, and its leadership is accountable through listed-company disclosures — one reason its corporate history, name changes and business segment reporting are unusually well documented for a firm of its size. Of the co-founders, Balachandran Krishnan has served as chief executive, and Deepta Rangarajan has spoken publicly as a co-founder on the growth of IRIS CARBON and its disclosure management business. The third co-founder, Swaminathan Subramaniam, is described in company reporting as the late co-founder. Product and consulting leadership for iFile and CARBON also appears in the company's public statements on launches and quarterly performance.

Digital Presence and Platforms

The company's digital presence centres on irisbusiness.com, which carries its product pages, case studies on central bank and regulator work, and investor-facing information, alongside dedicated product sites for IRIS CARBON. Its software is delivered primarily through digital deployment models, including cloud SaaS and on-premise installations, and the company states that its products are certified to ISO 27001 and SSAE 18 (SOC 1 Type 2) standards. For customers, the platform experience — collaborative disclosure authoring inside familiar office tools, automated tagging, validation and filing outputs — is the product, more than any public-facing content.

Role in the Indian News and Information Ecosystem

IRIS's contribution to the news ecosystem is indirect but structural. Indian financial journalism runs on filings: results, shareholding patterns, capital adequacy returns, GST-era business data and sustainability disclosures. When those filings are created and collected as structured data rather than as scanned documents, they can be searched, compared across companies and years, and fed into the databases that newsrooms and data providers rely on. IRIS has worked on both sides of that system in India — reporting infrastructure for the central bank and exchanges on one side, and filing and tax compliance software for companies on the other — and its long involvement with XBRL in India places it among the firms that shaped how Indian regulatory data became machine-readable.

Notable Facts and Developments

The company has received industry recognition cited in its own reporting, including Best Regulatory Technology Services at the Central Banking awards in London in 2024, a Financial Express best fintech recognition, and tax technology awards. Its 2025–26 reporting shows a business in transition: divestment of the tax technology line, an investment phase in its global RegTech SaaS business, growth reported in its SupTech revenues, quarterly growth in IRIS CARBON's annual recurring revenue, and the formal renaming of the listed company to IRIS RegTech Solutions Limited in November 2025. Each of those developments points the same way — away from services and domestic tax software, toward productised regulatory and supervisory technology sold internationally.

How to Access and Use IRIS

Access is enterprise-to-enterprise. Regulators and supervisors procure platforms such as iFile and iDEAL for data collection and reporting programmes; listed companies and their advisers subscribe to IRIS CARBON for disclosure management and XBRL or iXBRL filing; and Indian businesses historically accessed its GST and invoice products as compliance software. There is no general public or newsroom subscription product: readers of this directory will most often encounter IRIS as the named technology provider in a regulator's digital reporting project, as a listed company covered by the financial press, or invisibly, in the structured quality of the filings they download.
