About KCRW
KCRW (89.9 FM) is an NPR member station broadcasting from the campus of Santa Monica College in Santa Monica, California, where it is licensed. Its call letters stand for College Radio Workshop: the station was founded in 1945 to train servicemen returning from World War II in the then-new technology of FM broadcasting.
It became a charter member of NPR at the network's incorporation on February 26, 1970, making Santa Monica College the second community college in the country to own a public radio or television station. Today the station is owned by the Santa Monica Community College District and describes itself as a community service of the college and NPR's flagship station for Southern California.
KCRW blends public-service journalism with a distinctive music identity — it is the broadcast home of the long-running music program Morning Becomes Eclectic — and reaches an estimated 450,000 listeners across Los Angeles and Orange County via 89.9 FM, HD Radio, and a network of repeaters. Its studios are in the 34,000-square-foot KCRW Media Center on the college's Center for Media and Design campus, with its main transmitter in the Laurel Canyon district of Los Angeles.
