NewsReach
NewsReach is a public-relations technology and content-distribution company headquartered in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Founded in 2018 by Darshan Shah and Soniya Kundnani, it began life with an ambitious idea for India's news business: to build a digital marketplace where local and regional news publishers and reporters could bring their content online, license it, and earn from it — and it has since evolved into a broader PR-tech platform through which brands and advertisers distribute press releases, sponsored articles and other content across a network of more than 2,000 partner publications in India. NewsReach describes itself as providing one-stop access to PR needs: a single, technology-driven platform on which clients can choose publications and packages, place sponsored content, and run press-release distribution in real time. Its story is a useful case study in how India's start-up ecosystem has tried to reorganise two old businesses at once — local news publishing and public relations.
Founding in Ahmedabad
NewsReach was founded in 2018 by first-generation entrepreneurs Darshan Shah and Soniya Kundnani. The company is headquartered in Ahmedabad, and its own account of its beginnings describes what started as a regional initiative growing rapidly into a national operation. The founding idea, as the founders explained it during the company's early funding rounds, was to create a "news ecosystem 2.0" of original and hyper-local content by empowering offline local news publishers and reporters to go online. India's local news layer — small newspapers, district-level publications and independent reporters serving rural and semi-urban audiences — historically operated offline and had limited ability to monetise its content beyond local advertising. NewsReach set out to digitise that layer: aggregating local publishers on one platform and giving their journalism a marketplace.
The original content marketplace
The company's first model was a content marketplace and syndication platform. Local publishers, reporters, stringers and professional content creators could aggregate their stories on NewsReach, quote prices for them, and license them in an open market to larger media houses, fellow publishers or any content buyer. For media organisations, the attraction was a consolidated platform on which to view and license news stories without maintaining extensive on-roll manpower in every district; for local journalists, it was recognition and payment for hyper-local reporting that larger outlets needed but could not economically gather themselves. The company built a proprietary content marketplace and an online publication system for publishers in a do-it-yourself software-as-a-service model, positioning itself as infrastructure for the news media landscape rather than as a publisher in its own right. Soniya Kundnani described the ambition at the time as becoming India's first regional content syndication platform, syndicating hyper-local content in text, video and other formats from local publishers for licensing in an open market.
Early funding: Mumbai Angels and the first seed round
NewsReach's model attracted angel investment early. The Mumbai Angels Network invested an undisclosed amount in a round the company announced during the COVID-19 period; founder Darshan Shah publicly praised the speed of that process, noting that the pitching took place on 10 April and the funds were wired within days of signing. Mumbai Angels' leadership framed the investment as a bet on reviving the local news industry by digitising it and creating visibility and marketability for publishers. A larger seed round followed: in November 2020, NewsReach announced it had raised $150,000 in a seed round led by the JITO Angel Network. Other participants included the CIIE initiative's start-up Oasis, Omnivore VC's managing partner Jinesh Shah, and a group of individual investors. The company said the fresh capital would expand its offering into southern Indian languages, starting with Telugu — a signal that its content ambitions were multilingual from early on.
The $300,000 round and expansion plans
In July 2021, NewsReach raised a further $300,000 in seed funding, again led by existing investor JITO Angel Network, with participation from ShuruUp Ventures and FAAD Network and a consortium of angel investors. The round was reported as oversubscribed, and the company said the money would go to technology innovation, hiring and expansion into multiple states. JITO Angel Network's chief investment officer, Pooja Mehta, explained the investor logic publicly: helping rural and semi-urban India go digital, and giving small and medium-sized publishers an opportunity to scale. By this stage, databases tracking the company recorded total funding of around $1.32 million across its rounds, with a long tail of angel and network investors — more than eighty backers in all, according to Tracxn's company profile.
The pivot to PR technology
As the company matured, its centre of gravity shifted from licensing local news to the adjacent and larger business of public relations distribution. NewsReach today presents itself primarily as a comprehensive PR-tech platform. On its own description, it is redefining the PR landscape by creating a seamless "PR universe" in which advertisers and brands can access every PR opportunity through a single platform: clients can choose their headlines and media outlets for precise targeting, and can amplify their message through press releases, podcasts and articles as well as sponsored placements. The distribution offer described in this directory's listing — press releases and sponsored content distributed in real time through a network of more than 2,000 partner publications across India — is the core of the current business. The pivot is a logical one: the publisher network NewsReach had assembled to syndicate local content became, from the other direction, a distribution network that brands would pay to reach.
Scale: publications and clients
The company reports substantial scale on both sides of its marketplace. It says it has partnered with over 2,000 publications across India and served over 1,000 clients; its own site also speaks of more than 1,500 clients in one account of its growth — figures that reflect a clientele counted at different points in its expansion. Third-party profiles of the company place its team in the range of 10 to 49 employees, based in Ahmedabad, serving clients that include small businesses, mid-market companies and enterprises. Its service lines span public relations and media buying, and profiles list client industries including arts and entertainment, energy, information technology, medical, retail and e-commerce. The network's composition — bridging regional and national publications — remains its distinguishing asset: a brand can use one platform to appear in both metropolitan media and the regional press of smaller Indian cities.
What the platform offers brands
For the brands and agencies that now form its customer base, NewsReach packages several distinct products. The first is press-release distribution, the classic PR wire function, delivered through its publication network. The second is sponsored content placement: articles and features placed in chosen publications, with the client able to select outlets or packages for dissemination. The third, reflecting the founders' current presentation of the platform, includes newer formats such as podcasts and advertiser articles designed to amplify a message beyond a single placement. Underpinning all of this is the self-serve technology layer — the DIY, platform-based approach the company built for publishers has its counterpart in a platform on which advertisers choose publications and headlines directly, rather than negotiating each placement through intermediaries. That emphasis on a single tech platform for the whole PR workflow is the essence of the "PR-tech" label the company now applies to itself.
Serving the publisher side
Although the brand-facing business now leads its public identity, NewsReach continues to describe a mission toward publishers and creators. Its stated vision remains the creation of a news ecosystem in which hyper-local content can reach a worldwide audience and local publishers can capitalise on the authentic stories they report, with the marketplace enabling creators to buy, sell and license their work. In practical terms, the two sides reinforce each other: regional publishers gain a route to sponsored-content revenue distributed from national brands, which for many small publications is a more reliable income than local advertising alone, while brands gain access to trusted regional outlets that national PR agencies often overlook. Whether one reads NewsReach as a news-marketplace company that became a PR platform, or as a PR platform built on a news network, the connecting thread is the digitisation of India's regional media layer — the goal its investors backed from the first rounds.
Position in India's PR and media landscape
NewsReach competes in a field that includes global press-release wires and Indian distribution services, but its profile differs from most of them in origin and emphasis. The big wires were built to serve corporate communications departments distributing announcements; NewsReach was built from the publisher side, out of an attempt to organise India's fragmented local news industry, and it brings that regional depth to distribution. Its Ahmedabad base also sets it apart from the Delhi–Mumbai axis that dominates Indian media and PR. Company databases rank it among India's notable PR content-distribution providers, and its longevity — operating since 2018, through multiple funding rounds and a business-model evolution — distinguishes it from the many short-lived media start-ups of the same period. The founders' stated direction is continued national growth and, in time, global expansion of the PR-tech platform.
Why NewsReach matters
NewsReach matters to a directory of Indian news agencies and content services because it sits at the junction of three stories: the digitisation of local Indian journalism, the rise of PR technology, and the economics that connect them. Founded in Ahmedabad in 2018 by Darshan Shah and Soniya Kundnani, backed by angel networks including JITO Angel Network, Mumbai Angels, ShuruUp Ventures and FAAD Network, it set out to let the country's lakhs of local publishers earn from their content online, and it built on that network a distribution business through which more than a thousand clients place press releases and sponsored content across more than 2,000 publications. Few Indian companies illustrate more clearly how the infrastructure of news and the infrastructure of publicity have grown into one another in the digital era.
