WBFO

WBFO (88.7 FM) is Buffalo's NPR member station — founded in 1959 by students and faculty at the University at Buffalo, one of the charter founding members of National Public Radio, and now part of Buffalo Toronto Public Media.

About WBFO

WBFO signed on the air on January 6, 1959, owned and operated by the State University of New York at Buffalo, starting out at just 190 watts. It began as a student-run station out of Allen Hall on UB's South Campus; for many years it operated primarily as a jazz station with a news bureau. WBFO reporter Ira Flatow, a UB graduate, left the station to join the inaugural staff of NPR when the network launched in 1971, and WBFO carried NPR's initial program, All Things Considered, from the very start.

By the 2000s UB was looking to exit broadcasting, and after discussions with the Western New York Public Broadcasting Association, WNED purchased WBFO in July 2011 for $4 million (along with WUBJ in Jamestown and WOLN in Olean). On March 1, 2012, the new owner debuted a combined lineup that made 88.7 FM exclusively a news and information station, folding WBFO's staff and news features into WNED's newsroom and selling off the old WNED AM 970 signal.

Today WBFO is owned by Buffalo Toronto Public Media and broadcasts from studios at 140 Lower Terrace in downtown Buffalo, serving Western New York and Southern Ontario. It carries NPR news and talk — including Morning Edition and All Things Considered — alongside locally produced reporting and cultural programming. Its digital home is wbfo.org.
