About World Oil

World Oil is a Houston, Texas-based monthly magazine covering the upstream oil and gas industry, from exploration and drilling through completion and production. Founded in 1916 and published monthly since, it is one of the world's oldest continuously published petroleum trade journals. Its editorial mission, "Defining Conventional, Shale and Offshore Technology for Oil and Gas," guides coverage of the technologies and business developments shaping the production of oil and gas both onshore and offshore. The magazine is the flagship of Gulf Energy Information (formerly Gulf Publishing Company), the Houston-based energy publisher that also produces Hydrocarbon Processing, Pipeline & Gas Journal, and the Petroleum Economist. World Oil's readers are global, qualified upstream engineers, managers, and operating professionals in 147 countries. It publishes at worldoil.com.

A century of publication

World Oil's history begins in September 1916, when Gulf Publishing Company was incorporated in Texas by Gulf Coast oil company executives and oilfield equipment manufacturers, amid wildcat discoveries in the Goose Creek field along the Houston Ship Channel. The company acquired the Gulf Coast Oil News, a weekly broadsheet, and appointed Ray Lofton Dudley, an oil reporter for the Houston Post, as editor. Dudley converted the paper to magazine format and guided its growth into a leading oil trade publication. In 1918 the title changed to The Oil Weekly to reflect expanded coverage across North America. By 1931, Dudley had acquired majority control of Gulf Publishing, and in 1947 The Oil Weekly was recast as the monthly World Oil magazine, as its content shifted toward news analysis and technology reports for an industry that had expanded worldwide.

Gulf Publishing Company

World Oil is published by Gulf Energy Information, which operated as Gulf Publishing Company from 1916 until a 2018 rebrand. Founded by Ray Lofton Dudley, the company expanded under William G. Dudley Sr. with sales staff and columnists around the world. A subsidiary of Euromoney Institutional Investor from 2001, the company returned to Houston independence in a 2016 management buyout led by CEO John Royall and Texas investors, timed to its centennial. In May 2016, the business and strategy publication Petroleum Economist transferred to the company, and in mid-2017 it acquired the 109-year-old Oildom Publishing. The company's data services support the Energy Web Atlas data visualization platform and the Construction Boxscore downstream project database, from Houston, London, and Mumbai.

Editorial focus

World Oil's editorial content covers the exploration, drilling, completion, production, and management segments of the worldwide oil and gas industry, both onshore and offshore. Each issue includes technical articles on the various upstream segments, worldwide oil and gas news, and statistical information, with the February, August, and September issues featuring worldwide forecast information and data. The magazine's technology coverage spans conventional reservoirs, shale plays, and deepwater operations, reflecting the three domains named in its mission. Its journalism addresses the needs of engineers recommending, specifying, approving, and purchasing oil and gas equipment and services, making it as much a technical resource as a news publication.

Circulation and audience

World Oil's audited circulation reaches subscribers in 147 countries, with a BPA Worldwide audit ensuring the accuracy of its numbers. More than 80 percent of circulation goes to oil and gas operating companies, from major integrated firms and independents to national and state-owned oil companies, while the remainder includes drilling and workover contractors, engineering firms, geological and geophysical contractors, financial institutions, and equipment manufacturers, service, and supply companies. The subscriber base is composed of managers, engineers, geologists, and geophysicists, the technical decision-makers of the upstream industry. This qualified, global audience makes the magazine a premier advertising vehicle for oilfield equipment and services companies.

Digital and events

Beyond the monthly print magazine, World Oil offers advertising and sponsorship across its digital editions, website, e-newsletters, major conference show dailies, events, webcasts, and supplements. The magazine's digital operation delivers daily upstream news alongside the print edition's technical depth, while its webcasts and events convene the industry's technical community. Gulf Energy Information's conferences and events program extends the World Oil brand into face-to-face gatherings. The combination of print authority, digital immediacy, and events reflects the multi-platform strategy of modern B2B energy publishing, with the century-old brand lending credibility across every channel.

Sister publications

World Oil anchors a portfolio of energy publications that together cover the full petroleum value chain. Hydrocarbon Processing, founded in 1922 from Dudley's philosophy of specialization, serves technical staff in refining, gas processing, and petrochemicals, with the bi-monthly Gas Processing & LNG supplement added in 2012. Pipeline & Gas Journal covers midstream transportation. The Petroleum Economist, with its London-based publishing and map cartography staff, provides business and strategy coverage of the global energy industry. This portfolio allows Gulf Energy Information to serve the industry from wellhead to retail, with World Oil representing the upstream foundation of the entire enterprise.

Industry standing

Within upstream journalism, World Oil's more than 100 years of continuous publication give it unmatched institutional memory. The magazine has documented every major transformation of the oil industry, from the early Texas booms through offshore development, the rise of OPEC, the shale revolution, and the digital transformation of drilling. Its centennial celebration in 2016, marked by seven special issues, underscored the publication's role as the industry's journal of record. For upstream professionals worldwide, World Oil remains essential reading: the technical publication where the industry learns about the technologies and developments shaping the production of oil and gas.

Technical authority

World Oil's technical authority derives from more than a century of publishing peer-level engineering content. The magazine's technical articles, written by industry engineers and specialists, address the practical problems of drilling, completion, and production: well design, reservoir management, offshore operations, and the application of new technologies from automation to data analytics. This practitioner-to-practitioner editorial model gives the magazine credibility that general business coverage cannot match. The publication's forecast issues, with their worldwide data on drilling and production, are consulted across the industry as planning references. For the engineers who design and operate the world's oil and gas wells, World Oil functions less as a magazine than as a professional reference, a role it has played since Ray Dudley's editorship in the 1910s.

Offshore coverage

World Oil's offshore coverage addresses the engineering and business of producing oil and gas beneath the oceans. Its reporting on deepwater drilling, floating production systems, subsea technology, and offshore safety serves the engineers and managers who operate in one of the industry's most demanding environments. The magazine's coverage of offshore markets, from the North Sea to the Gulf of Mexico to West Africa to Brazil's pre-salt fields, gives readers a global view of marine energy development. This offshore focus reflects the upstream industry's reality: some of the world's most significant reserves lie beneath the sea, and producing them requires the industry's most advanced technology. For offshore professionals, the magazine's technical articles provide the specialized knowledge their work demands.

World Oil publishes at worldoil.com, where its daily news, technical articles, and data products serve the global upstream community. From its 1916 origins as Gulf Coast Oil News through its evolution into the leading technical publication for upstream professionals, the magazine has chronicled more than a century of oil and gas development. As the industry confronts new challenges in efficiency, emissions, and energy transition, World Oil's mission of defining conventional, shale, and offshore technology continues to guide its journalism into its second century.
